Actually, VHF means exactly ultra short waves, so we include 50MHz and 80, 145, 430 etc. You probably meant UHF, which means Ultra High Frequency. Differences? The UHF wavelength is 70cm and the VHF is 2m,
within the range, here for the benefit of 2m outside the city, UHF with high-placed antennas works well for built-up ones, although it does not mean that you will not communicate on VHF in the city, because you will communicate, but this is how it used to be. Examples of ranges for amateur repeaters, at 2m with good propagation it flies up to 200km, at 70cm with good propagation, we are happy when it flies 70km, these are my observations made over a period of time.
