    Good morning,

I have a trivial, but quite bothersome problem.
Namely, today the right alt key has stopped working (it has ceased to fulfill its function - it is impossible to enter Polish letters with it)

Currently, it looks like the "right alt" and "left alt" keys have the same effect: with their help + letter, the menu in the browser is dropped (alt + e - editing, alt + n - tools, etc.), while in the editor its use has no effect.

System: Windows 8.1, Polish language installed, programmer's keyboard layout - theoretically it should be ok, but something is wrong ...

Could someone tell you something because I dug a chunk of the internet and nothing helps? [/ Tr]

in the search [magnifying glass] enter 'typing settings' and 'keyboard settings' and check these settings if they are correct

    Typing settings:
    correct spelling errors automatically - "enabled" is set;
highlight misspellings - "enabled" option set

    Keyboard settings:
all options: on-screen keyboard, keys permanently, toggle keys, filter keys - set to "off".

I think these settings are correct.

A colleague in the post above leads me with a link that perhaps this is the result of some update; I rather thought that it was the cat that ran through the keyboard causing the settings to be changed (which happened many times, but never was such a problem), but I will dig through these updates and see what comes out.

    Hello
I'm here for the first time. I have the same problem. Yesterday I received an update to WINDOWS 8.1 (Samsung) SYNAPTICS - POINTING DRAWING - SYNAPTICS PS / 2 PORT TOUTCHPAD. In addition, it is important. From that moment on, I also have a problem with Polish characters. For me, Polish characters work in the layout LEFT CTRL + LEFT ALT + character.

Looking through other forums and looking for information on how to get out of this situation, you can see that a lot of people have this problem.

Well - as my colleague writes two posts above - the cause of the confusion is the update called: "synaptics - pointing drawing - synaptics ps / 2 port touchpad"

Uninstall it (it is not in Windows update, but in the control panel -> Programs and functions -> uninstall).

After uninstalling and restarting the computer, everything should be OK.

And I already suspected the cat of this dishonorable prank :-D

Topic summary

The issue discussed involves the right Alt key not functioning for entering Polish letters on a Windows 8.1 system with a programmer's keyboard layout. Users reported that both the right and left Alt keys triggered browser menus instead of the expected character input. Suggested solutions included checking typing and keyboard settings, and a specific update related to the Synaptics touchpad was identified as a potential cause. Uninstalling this update resolved the problem for multiple users, restoring the functionality of the Alt key for Polish characters.
