    Hi there.

I have a smart card reader in one of my laptops.
Out of curiosity, I put my ATM card there ( :P ) and W7x64 detected the device and began to search on the net but did not find it. The reader itself works properly in the system.

My question is, what can such a reader be practically used for?
Maybe it is better to remove it from the computer to save energy and resources.?

For example, to authorize the user with such a card and pin instead of the traditional login with a login and password, for authorization on websites (the user's personal certificate is then stored on the card) and many others. Such logins are safer, because in addition to the password (pin), a hardware key, i.e. a card, is required.

And where can I buy such a card and with what software to handle it?

Can I use a card from a bank, for example? It will expire for a week and it might be useful.

To log on to a laptop, you need the appropriate software and a dedicated, usually personalized card.
Smart card login is supported by Active Directory. With a system without AD access, the smart card login was supported by the EIDAuthenticate program - look, I only logged in on the network with AD.
The same applies to accessing a website that supports such login security (here, a programmed card with a personal certificate is provided by the website operator).

I was also analyzing the topic on other websites on the Internet. A redundant module for the average user.
