What memory you don't use, the "faster" ones will run at the speed of the "slower" ones. It is best to choose the same memory to avoid compatibility problems, if you can't buy identical ones also buy 2400MHz CL15.

You can mix memories but as above , if you buy faster ones than the ones you currently have , the faster ones will work at the speed of the slower ones .
But it is best to buy identical ones as you have the option because then you are sure that the memories will work without a problem .

    I sent a question to G.Skill,Taiwan.
Whether the following two models of G.Skill memory are compatible with each other.
The older model I have and its successor.
The difference in the description is 8GRR / 8GVR.
    G.Skill DDR4 8GB (4GBx2) 2400MHz, CL15, Ripjaws 4 Red (F4-2400C15D-8GRR)
    and
    G.Skill Ripjaws V DDR4, 8GB (4GBx2), 2400MHz, CL15, 1.2V (F4-2400C15D-8GVR)

    G.Skill responds:

    Quote:
    Dear Customer,
Both F4-2400C15D-8GRR and F4-2400C15D-8GVR run at 2400MHz with total capacity of 8GB(4GBx2), but they are not compatible with each other.

Please note that mixing memory kits, even if the same model number, may result in compatibility issue. G.SKILL will guarantee the compatibility for single memory kit only. Each of our memory kits is thoroughly tested to ensure compatibility within each memory kit. And because we have not tested our memory kit with your existing memory kit, we cannot guarantee compatibility when multiple kits are used. Please visit our FAQ for more information: http://www.gskill.com/en/faq/Memory.

If you have any further questions on choosing the memory kit, please let us know the following:
    1. Full model number of the motherboard
    2. Full model number of the CPU
    Thank you.
    Best Regards

I have poor English and understood that these two memory models are NOT compatible with each other ..

Now I have a confusion in my head :/
How do you see it ?

ps. board supports both models :

Since these two sets of memory have not been tested by G.Skill, so this company guarantees compatibility only for a single set of memory.

That's right, but they were tested only single pairs composed of the same model.
It is very likely that they will be compatible with each other, but if the manufacturer does not guarantee it, then buying them , you do it at your own risk.

    One more question :
Intel claims that the supported memory for the i5-6600k processor is DDR4 RAM at 1866/2133.
I have in my computer RAM which runs at 2400MHz. (MSI board set such a profile as a kind of turbo for games, OC)
Without OC, the RAM was running at 2133.

1-is this due to XMP ?
2-what if I buy RAM with a frequency of, say, 3000MHz ? The board will set it to this 3000 ?
3-Max number of memory channels for i5-6600k is 2 slots. What if I stick 4 dice in the board ?

Do not confuse channel with slot. A channel (Channel) is two slots (slots) on the board.
The processor supports a maximum of two channels, which corresponds to four slots on the board.

Topic summary

The discussion centers on the compatibility of mixing DDR4 2400MHz RAM with higher frequency modules on an MSI Z170A GAMING PRO motherboard. Users emphasize that when mixing RAM, the faster modules will operate at the speed of the slower ones, recommending the use of identical memory to avoid compatibility issues. A user inquires about the compatibility of two G.Skill memory models, which G.Skill indicates are not guaranteed to work together. The conversation also touches on the impact of XMP profiles on RAM speeds and clarifies that the Intel i5-6600K processor supports a maximum of two memory channels, corresponding to four slots on the motherboard.
