The heaters do not require any maintenance, apart from making sure that the safety valve is operational. The efficiency is checked by turning or pressing the appropriate lever on the safety valve. Then water should drip. As for the anode, you can find out by looking inside from the bottom of the boiler, or on the manufacturer's website, if there is one.
