Gentlemen, I bought a BMW E60 with a 2.2 170 hp engine with a gas installation. The previous owner was flooded with oil Elf 10W40 and while browsing various forums I read that the only right oil for this engine is 5W30 or 5W40. At the present moment after driving some 2.5 thousand km the car took some 300-400ml of oil. My mechanic claims that if he is getting oil now, there is absolutely no change to 5W30 because he will take even more. What do you think about this?

The mechanic is right, you can not change the semi-synthetic oil to a full synthetic because he will take more. Fill it with 10W40 semi-synthetic. And as for "taking" the oil, check if you have exhaust gas in the cooling system or "butter" under the oil stopper.

There is no butter under the stopper, and the exhaust gas in the system is how to check it?

Enter the "head gasket leak tester" for alliedrogo. Did you watch the car from the bottom? Maybe this oil is running somewhere.

Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity, but I will check what you say as soon as possible.

You can drive to the mechanic and check for a few zlotys. However, first look at the engine or you do not see any leakage. Certainly not flood the system's syntax.

Your mechanic is like night, dark.

Will you be able to treat the engine as it spills out on the half-synthesizer and during the spin? No .?

So there is nothing to write about, the engine is to have the oil for which it was designed and for the given climate zone.

    Added after 3 [minutes]:

In general, after the VIN, do you have any Polish vehicle history, have you filmed three times in Poland and how did you enter it again?

Besides how do you have the M54 oil checker?

Is the exhaust pipe clean or kopci?

Is it a big oil consumption (150ml / 1000km) in a multi-valve engine? No. (Opel thinks that 700ml / 1000 is the norm !!! 8-O And that's why it falls)
Especially that you drive on the wrong oil and you can create more shit, for example on the rings. I would do the engine rinsing, (the release of rings from cough and dirt) and after that I would use a ceramizer and take oil will certainly decrease. Checked in several sills. The oil, of course, recommended by the manufacturer.

Thank you for the exhausting statements, but as I see the sentences are divided and I do not know what to do ... What is this separator and how does it work?

Topic summary

The discussion revolves around the appropriate oil type for a BMW E60 with a 2.2 170 HP engine, previously using Elf 10W40. Users express concerns about switching to 5W30 or 5W40, with one mechanic advising against it due to potential increased oil consumption. Participants suggest checking for leaks and exhaust gas in the cooling system, and some recommend engine flushing and using a ceramizer to reduce oil consumption. The consensus emphasizes using oil that aligns with the manufacturer's specifications and considering the vehicle's history.
