I know that the previous owner was pouring 10W40 Castrol edge. I want to rinse the engine and change the oil. From October I have a car 20 km each day to work one way and up to 3 times a month the route of 400 km plus weekend trips. After the purchase, I changed the oil, today I have 9.5 thousand km from the change. I am asking for a hint whether this will be ok or something else.

5W40 and it's for diezel and it's a synthetic ??? I think it will work in the polar circle, but it will disappear faster in our country. The oil grade depends a lot on the mileage and condition of the engine. A colleague in our climate should pour at least 15W40 as a year-round oil. This is a subsistence minimum for the engine :-) The first two digits indicate the viscosity grade at low temperatures and the last at high temperatures. In this case, 15 is the maximum viscosity that the oil can reach at a given negative temperature, the negative pumpability limit temperature is -20 ° C, the minimum viscosity at 100 ° C. Whereas 40 means minimum viscosity at 100 ° C, maximum viscosity at 100 ° C, minimum viscosity at 150 ° C and a shear load of 106 1 / s (HTHS).

Warning for writing idiocy. Grade 15W40 oils are mineral oils, expert.

Mazda 626 2.0D, counter 290,000, always Shell 10W40, never refills because oil does not take, I change every 13-15 thousand. and a day I do 5- 100 km, if only 5 km, I do an additional circle around the estate to always warm up the engine and no problems with the engine for years.

I would give you six months of freedom from writing in the forum for such stupid things trying to damage the engine.
Only synthetic, the whole of France, Germany and Japan, rides on it and has to drive as long as it rides.
The toys fly on 0W20 0W30. Corsa C 5W40 flooding another makes the engine start to take oil and the timing wears out quickly.

Hello. I would personally flood the 10W40. Best Store Bought. Because you can come across fakes on various websites.

    So 10W40 only or semi-synthetic?

You can pour 5w40 synyetics if you want to smoke a little less, on 10w40 a little bit both are good and can be used important not to mix them.

Topic summary

The discussion revolves around the oil change for a VW Golf 4 1.9 TDI 110KM, specifically regarding the transition from 10W40 Castrol Edge oil. The original poster seeks advice on whether to continue using 10W40 or switch to a different oil type after driving 9,500 km since the last change. Responses suggest that while 10W40 is acceptable, using 5W40 synthetic oil could reduce smoke emissions. It is emphasized that mixing different oil types should be avoided. Recommendations also highlight the importance of using high-quality, genuine oil to prevent engine damage.
