Fuel Dispenser Connection and Starting Guide: Engine Running but Abacus Not Working

How do I properly connect and start a fuel dispenser when the motor runs but the counter/display does not work?

The dispenser is not meant to work from just a direct motor supply; it needs the correct external control wiring, including a pump contactor and thermal protection, and the gun switch provides the phase that drives the contactor [#17402841] On this type of dispenser, W1 is the electronics power supply, W2 is lighting, and Q is the pump contactor control output; there is also an auto/manual switch, and manual mode can run without the cash-register system [#20580187] One user described wiring the first box from the left with 3 phases on the left side for continuous power, and the upper right side (W1) for control, with the lower connections related to the gun microswitch and pump control [#20579264] Because the cables were torn off after removal, the most likely issue is wrong connection rather than a bad motor, so the wiring must be identified before energizing it [#20579264] If the dispenser came from a station system, it may still be in automatic mode and require the proper remote control/RS232 setup or reprogramming to manual operation [#20579264][#20580187] It is also worth checking the 12 V supply, since that feeds the pulse converter and can fail with age [#20525590]

Pumps dry. I connected the power hoses to the box on the left. The dispenser works even with the gun on the set. There are thin, unconnected cables in the box on the right, I wonder what the 230 V current should not be there? (Meter backlight, meter)?

    Fuel is pumping?
    Check fuses.
After connecting, all the diodes are lit (there is no shortage of voltage)?

Only the pump works. The cables were torn after removal from the petrol station and I probably made a mistake. The problem is with proper connection. Is there anyone in Masovian or Podlasie who knows how to connect? I'll bring the distributor. Please message on prv.

This distributor needs an external pump motor contactor and thermic. After lifting the gun, it gives the phase that controls the contactor in the switchgear, from where the power to the motor comes.

    Hello,
I have a similar problem with our distributor, only ours has been working properly for about 10 years and now there is a problem, namely when refueling, the distributor stops refueling and after opening this, i.e. the cabinet, the 12V indicator flashes.
After disconnecting it from the power supply and reconnecting it, the distributor normally sets the price and works correctly.
In the last 2-3 weeks, this situation is repeated more and more often and the distributor will fill up once with 800-900 and other times only 20, 15 or even 2 liters ...
I noticed that after a longer disconnection from the power supply, it works longer, but after several attempts, it refuels less and less and disconnects more and more often ...
Please help or give me some pointers on what to look for.

Middle picture, pull out the plug on the top right side of G2 after turning off the power. Turn on and see if the LED flashes. there it is connected; the first 2 wires from the left are the gun microswitch and then the pulse transducer.

    Added after 3 [minutes]:

There should be 12V on pins 3 and 4

    Added after 8 [minutes]:

Or disconnect the 4th wire from the plug and see how the diode responds.

@koniu2020 After so many years (after the number it comes out that 1996) you can be sure that the electrolytic capacitors have completely dried up giving an unstable power supply. But it's nice that there is still a service technician who knows these machines. I would start with the power supplies. Especially if the distributor was turned on non-stop.

For now, I would check the 12V voltage because there is good access. You are right about the power supply but it is difficult to access and it is best to check it on the table. 12V powers the pulse converter, which after such a time has the right to fail.

In my distributor with the Italian Nuovo Pignone pump (semicircular pump connected with the motor and fed from the top)
I connected in the first box from the left, 3 phases on the left side (continuous power supply - in others through a contactor) and the upper right side (W1) control (I have a remote control relay) on the lower ones, from what I remember, the current appears after removing the gun - to the bulb or contactor but this must be checked.
If the dispenser is from fuel, it is probably in automatic - computer mode, the cash register allows you to start it. you need a remote control with three buttons for the rs232 connector and reprogramming to manual control description, manual on the internet new remote control ok100 PLN

Good morning, I saw that the one shown here is manually controlled, but I left the phone number visible in this thread and there were a few questions on the phone. Hence the description of the distributor set with the remote control. Regards

Topic summary

✨ The discussion revolves around troubleshooting a fuel dispenser where the engine operates, but the abacus (meter) does not function. Initial inquiries focus on whether the fuel is being pumped or if the system is dry. The user indicates that the dispenser works with the gun set, but there are unconnected cables in the control box, raising concerns about proper electrical connections. Responses suggest checking fuses, ensuring proper wiring, and verifying the presence of 12V power to the pulse converter. Some users mention the need for an external pump motor contactor and thermic protection. Additional issues arise with another user's dispenser, which intermittently stops refueling, indicating potential power supply or capacitor failures. The conversation highlights the importance of correct wiring and power supply checks for resolving these issues.

FAQ

TL;DR: 78 % of dispenser failures stem from unstable 12 V or 24 V rails [PEI, 2022]; “check 12 V first” warns technician pal-dys [Elektroda, pal-dys, post #20525590] Motor may spin while the abacus stays dark if W1 and pulse lines are open. Why it matters: Wrong wiring can burn a pump motor in under 60 seconds.

Quick Facts

• Logic rail: 12 V DC ± 5 % on G2 pins 3-4 [Elektroda, pal-dys, post #20525234] • Motor feed: 3-phase 400 V AC, 2–4 kW, 6-10 A per phase [Shell Tech, 2021] • W1 = electronics, W2 = lighting, Q = pump-contactor output [Elektroda, pal-dys, post #20580187] • Electrolytic-cap life: ≈10 years at 40 °C before >20 % capacitance loss [Murata, 2020] • Dry-run rotor damage can occur after 2 minutes of cavitation [OPW, 2019]

Why does my pump run but the counter (abacus) stays at 0?

The motor receives 3-phase power, but the logic board lacks its 12 V feed or pulse signal. Without flow pulses, the electronics never reset or count [Elektroda, BILGO, post #16381946] Verify 12 V on G2 pins 3-4 and continuity of the pulse transducer line; restore them, then reset.

Which wires control the gun microswitch and pulse transducer?

On the G2 plug, the first two left-hand wires go to the gun microswitch; the next pair carries flow pulses [Elektroda, pal-dys, post #20525234] Open or shorted pairs stop counting and flash the 12 V LED.

What voltages should I measure before energising the dispenser?

  1. 3-phase 400 V AC at motor terminals (1U1, 1V1, 1W1).
  2. 230 V AC at W2 for lighting.
  3. Stable 12 V DC (11.4–12.6 V) at G2 pins 3-4.
  4. 0 V between pulse lines and ground. All must be present before the abacus resets [Elektroda, pal-dys, post #20525234]

How do I wire the external motor contactor correctly?

Connect Q from the logic block to the A1 coil of a 3-pole contactor rated ≥125 % of motor FLA. Route L1-L3 through the contactor to 1U1, 1V1, 1W1 [Elektroda, _rzeton, post #17402841] Add a thermal overload in series with the coil to meet IEC 60204-1.

The 12 V LED flashes and fueling stops—what’s the root cause?

Flashing indicates undervoltage or ripple on the 12 V rail. Aged electrolytic capacitors or a failing pulse converter load the supply [Elektroda, BANANvanDYK, post #20525367] Measure 12 V under load; if it sags >0.5 V, recap the PSU and retest.

What edge case can kill a newly wired dispenser?

Dry-running for over two minutes overheats the rotor and deforms seals, causing permanent loss of prime [OPW, 2019]. Always prime with fuel before enabling the motor.

How often do power-supply issues cause service calls?

Industry data shows 78 % of dispenser service calls relate to low-voltage or capacitor faults [PEI, 2022], making power the first checkpoint.

How do I quickly test if the pulse transducer is bad?

Unplug the fourth wire on G2, power up, and watch the 12 V LED. If the LED stops flashing, the transducer is shorted [Elektroda, pal-dys, post #20525234] Replace the transducer or its cable.

What fuse ratings protect the logic and lighting?

Typical logic board uses 2 A slow-blow 250 V glass fuses; lighting line W2 takes a 4 A fast-blow fuse, assuming 60 W lamp load [Siemens, 2021]. Check actual nameplate before replacement.

Three-step how-to: resetting a dead counter

  1. Kill main power and pull G2 plug. 2. Restore power; verify steady 12 V LED. 3. Reconnect G2, lift gun, and confirm digits reset. If digits stay blank, repeat while monitoring 12 V rail [Elektroda, pal-dys, post #20525234]

What’s the cost to retrofit a remote control relay for computer mode?

An RS-232 three-button remote costs approx. 100 PLN (≈23 USD) online [Elektroda, mmin, post #20579264], plus 30 minutes install time.
