    Hello

I have an old 1TB disk on which I have W7, data and Backup in the form of a disk image and partition after installing windows 7 and other applications I need. This disk is slowly dying, I have already purchased a new one with the same capacity. Now my question is, is it possible to run these images from the old disk so that they can be mounted on the new one? in the sense that this W7 and the app were installed on the new disk. The picture was taken with Norton Ghost some time ago.

If it is possible, what do I have to remember, should I initially divide the disk into the same partitions or will it divide the disk itself after motivating the image? And if it is impossible from the connected old disk, should I put it on the external one? if so, how to make it boot?

    best regards

I don't think you can do what you say. The partition image is made with its specific size, and you will not make it exactly the same on the new disk.

Just clone the disk. Only the new one must be of the same capacity (to the byte) or larger. If it is even a byte smaller it could be a problem.
And be careful when choosing where to clone from :)

Damn, because I don't waste the time to reinstal W7 from the update tile and then the app etc. And the question of the keys will I be able to find them: / for W7 I have on the disc for sure but the rest

I think a colleague will have to reinstall the system on a new disk. Then move everything unfortunately. Tedious work when I experienced it.

Xuru I just want to skip the disk cloning option because on the old one I have some system errors that I would not like on the new one. (e.g. the task manager does not refresh, after completing a process it still appears only after closing and reopening it disappears ;) )

@ skeletor11111 why not? If the new disk will be of the same or larger capacity, you can easily.

Even if it is smaller, only the partition with the system can be backed up, which can be shrunk in advance if necessary. Of course, it is worth having copies on a different medium in case of any problems.

@ Storm8 It turns out that the system is damaged, in which case you will rather be reinstalled.

The W7 image was made as everything was fine, that's why I care so much not to chase SP1 and not install Office etc.

Just wondering how to bite the drives are both 1TB one Seagat the other WD

I had a problem with installing the image on another disk, so I wrote about it to my friend.

If the image is ok and the disk is bigger then no problem.

The disk is the same size, the image probably weighs 255 GB.

If he can do it, how? Just fire up and install on a new disk? Did you partition the disk beforehand? Do I have to rip a bootable version to an external drive? Because I will say the first time I tried to install from a disk image on another disk

I installed the images on the disk, I set the new disk as bootable and this error is:

    "BOOTMGR is missing
Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart. "

For the system board, select "Repair your computer" after booting, and the "System Recovery Options" window will appear. Select the "Next" button. Something like "Repair and restart" and "No" should appear. Choose this "No". Then "Next" again and the "System Recovery Options" window will appear - select "Command Prompt" and type in:
    1) bootrec.exe / FixMbr - and wait for the message to be displayed, then:
    2) bootrec.exe / FixBoot - and as above,
    3) bootrec.exe / RebuildBcd - and as above.
Remember the spelling exactly as I wrote!
After positive messages you enter "Exit". The command line window will close, click "Reboot" and re-enter the BIOS, set as the first boot hard disk, save and exit.

Will something like that work in this case? Nothing will erase me or reset the system to the version from the disc?

Topic summary

The discussion revolves around transferring a Norton Ghost disk image from an old 1TB HDD to a new 1TB HDD. Users express concerns about the feasibility of restoring the image due to potential partition size mismatches and system errors on the old disk. Suggestions include cloning the disk, but some prefer to avoid this due to existing system issues. It is noted that if the new disk is of equal or larger capacity, the image can be restored, provided the image is intact. Users also discuss the necessity of making the new disk bootable and the potential for encountering a "BOOTMGR is missing" error during the process. Precautions include ensuring backups are made and considering partitioning before installation.
