Youtube does not break, I'm afraid it is thanks to Windows XP and browsers that are no longer supported on this system. This system was released 16 years ago and unfortunately it's time to say goodbye. Of course, it can be used e.g. in offices, but for multimedia or the Internet it is already a dinosaur.

There is no, you can optionally download movies to disk and play from the disk, maybe then they will play correctly.

Don't you have something set up in energy management?
I set it so that working on batteries I have limited performance and youtube cuts out but after connecting the power supply the system goes to maximum performance and playback becomes smooth.

Click on YT on the icon of your profile in the upper right corner and select from the menu at the bottom: "Restore Youtube classic look".

    You won't change HTML5.

I have on one of the computers XP, 1GB of RAM, E2140 and YT work normally, so it's rather a matter of your computer / system / internet / settings.

I also stop after about 20 minutes, probably it has to do with inactivity, in the newer version of YT a message is displayed. Just jump forward 5s and continue playing.

The same as here: https://support.mozilla.org/en/questions/1126635 it is possible that something is broken.
If I have time, I will check if it stops under Chrome etc.

From what I see, you can also try to uninstall Flash and see if something has changed.

Is hardware acceleration on or off?

I have Ubuntu 16.04 (LTS), on it Firefox and YT work like gold. Yes, there were light problems when I had internet radio, but since I have optical fiber - it flies like a dream.
You can install Ubuntu (or other Linux) next to your XP and play on it on the network.

Affirmative. Where everything is running on Linux (Puppy Tahr latest version, FF 45), on XP / 7 miracles happen to me with downloading IP etc., but YT works ok.
Provide SMART HDD, perform bootable memtest.
Reset your browser along with deleting the FF system files.
After installing FF 45 on W7 / 64bit (new after format) the browser crashed. Even after updating to 47-> 52. Helped reset FF and delete folders, install FF52-64bit!
    Enter firefox version.
Do you have enabled hardware acceleration in FF? They asked and you didn't answer.

on html5 the movie stops after 20 minutes, without this error I would still be able to do it, what settings can be responsible for it?

Amount of MB for FF buffer on disk (FF settings)?

Keeps the order on your computer as well as in the browser, all unnecessary garbage is removed immediately (in total I am a light pedant when it comes to PC)

    Use CCleaner.
You may have an infection - screen # 1. Use MBAM, ADWcleaner, CureIt, specify FRST.txt and Addition.txt.
You can reset the TCP / IP stack in connection with screen # 1.
As for Flash vs HTML5, I note that newly uploaded movies due to a technological slip-up are only after a time of "converting" to HTML5 (Colleague @Kolobos maybe he'll explain better), because new movies on YT are like a "different race" of a movie.

Compatibility does not guarantee such a retro card.
In connection with stuttering, the issue of enabled acceleration and repeating occurs amount of RAM allocated to the card.
On Geforce MX4 I don't remember full screen on YT at all.

FAQ

TL;DR: Many XP-era PCs see YouTube HTML5 freeze at ~20 minutes; “I also stop after about 20 minutes.” Try a 5‑second seek, disable hardware acceleration, reset Firefox, or move to Linux; you can’t force Flash. [Elektroda, Kolobos, post #16632705]

Why it matters: This FAQ helps users on older Windows/Firefox systems fix YouTube stalls and finish long videos without switching devices.

Quick Facts

Why does YouTube stop after ~20 minutes on my old Windows/Firefox setup?

It’s a known HTML5 playback stall on legacy systems. The player may pause near 20 minutes due to session or idle handling. A quick 5‑second seek often resumes playback. “Just jump forward 5s and continue playing.” Consider uninstalling old Flash remnants and testing Chrome too. [Elektroda, Kolobos, post #16632705]

Can I force YouTube to use Flash or the old player?

No. YouTube now uses HTML5 only. Legacy Flash plugins or “YouTube Flash Video Player” will not re-enable Flash rendering on current YouTube. [Elektroda, Kolobos, post #16632528]

Does restoring the classic YouTube look fix the 20‑minute stops?

No. Restoring the classic interface only changes the layout. Playback still uses the HTML5 player, so stalls persist. [Elektroda, 2649457, post #16632307]

How do I turn off Firefox hardware acceleration to test stutter?

Do this: 1. Open Firefox Options > General. 2. Uncheck “Use recommended performance settings” and uncheck “Use hardware acceleration when available.” 3. Restart Firefox and retest YouTube. [Elektroda, Kolobos, post #16634254]

Video freezes but audio plays—what does that indicate?

That pattern points to a video decode or rendering path issue rather than network loss. Users report picture stops with the spinner while audio continues around 23 minutes; seeking restores video temporarily. [Elektroda, 2649457, post #16634943]

Could laptop power settings cause choppy or cutting playback?

Yes. On battery, reduced performance profiles can throttle CPU/GPU and cause cutouts. Plugging in or setting maximum performance often restores smooth playback. [Elektroda, tos18, post #16631444]

I’m on a desktop, not a laptop—what else should I check?

Inspect cooling. A clogged CPU heatsink or fan can downclock the processor under load and disrupt continuous decoding. Clean dust and ensure good airflow. [Elektroda, tos18, post #16631981]

Are there plugins that keep the older YouTube player?

No supported plugin can force old YouTube playback. As a workaround, download the video first and play it locally with VLC or MPC‑HC. [Elektroda, Kolobos, post #16631359]

Is Windows XP itself the problem for modern YouTube?

Partly. XP and many browsers for it are no longer supported. Modern web media features and security updates are missing, causing reliability issues. [Elektroda, badboy84, post #16631306]

Should I uninstall Flash even if YouTube uses HTML5 now?

Yes, test without Flash. Old Flash components can conflict with media paths. Users reported uninstalling Flash as a troubleshooting step for HTML5 stalls. [Elektroda, Kolobos, post #16632705]

Will Linux help on older hardware that struggles with YouTube?

Often, yes. Users report smooth YouTube on Ubuntu 16.04 with Firefox, especially on stable broadband. Dual‑booting beside XP is a practical path. [Elektroda, Pokrentz, post #16632951]

Firefox keeps crashing or acting odd—what maintenance helps?

Reset Firefox and remove old profile folders, then install a clean, supported build. Tools like CCleaner and malware scans can also help stability. [Elektroda, safbot1st, post #16633000]

How can I finish long videos without getting up to refresh?

Use the seek trick before 20 minutes. Tap the right arrow to skip 5 seconds and reset the playback timer. Repeat every 15–18 minutes. [Elektroda, Kolobos, post #16632705]

Why do some Android videos have sound but a black screen?

That indicates a rendering failure on the device. Users saw black video frames with audio still playing on Android while the same clips worked elsewhere. [Elektroda, 2649457, post #16631281]

What minimum specs have users confirmed still work with YouTube on XP?

Reports show YouTube working on XP with a Pentium E2140 and 1 GB RAM using a supported browser. Performance varies by GPU and drivers. [Elektroda, Kolobos, post #16632528]
