Hello. I have a question. I lost the automatic gearbox and I have a question if a different gearbox with different markings will come, it is known that it must be 5HP-19, it is probably from what I remember EFR that the rest of the markings are for me. The engine is marked AVF. Whether or not there is any indication of the crate other than the EFF Thanks in advance for your help.

the gearbox with the designation EFR was associated only with the engine 2.5 with the designation AFB ...
while the 1.9 AVF engine should have a gearbox marked EYF ...
of course you can try to "match" the chest with a different designation
but it will not be in line with what the manufacturer recommends ...
AVF engine - EYF gearbox ...

Oh just like that EYF. So there can be no other designation? Will not walk?

    it can't ... that I don't know ...
I know, however, that it should be with the designation I gave you ...
manual gearboxes for this engine acc. the manufacturer matches up to nine markings,
while automatic only one ... and regardless of which car it was installed ...
it is best to look for a used crate marked: EYF, but only one with a guarantee; it's so hard ...
and isn't it worth considering the repair of the one you have in the car? ..

The cost of the repair scares me. Maybe I will describe what happened, so one day I saw that there was a stain of oil from the box under the car, so the next day I went to the mechanic who changed the oil for me not a month ago because I thought maybe a gasket or something. I drove maybe about 20 km and the box stopped pulling, I called a tow truck on the spot, the mechanic poured 5 liters of oil to see where the oil was leaking from and found that somewhere from the box and that it is probably necessary to disassemble the box because either some sleeve was worn out or zymering. And knowing life while undressing along the way, it will turn out that something else and several thousand will go. It's hard to find chests with my tag. And I don't know what to do anymore.

as for the box with your designation, it's not that hard to find a drug ...
there are several of them on Allegro itself, and a dozen on Ebay ... but unfortunately they are crates
from cars with unknown history, and most of them with considerable mileage ... if not all ...
from the description you gave, 99% of the torque converter on the sliding sleeve of the oil pump is seized up ...
well-known topic from ZF gearboxes ... if the gearbox was not "tired" with oil deficiency, it can be repaired while maintaining costs
on a "normal" level ... of course it depends on you which way you go and what your approach to the car is ...
I would personally go to repair the one I have (if it was in my car) but first you need to diagnose what happened
and what would be the costs of its possible repair ... but this would have to be seen by someone who knows about it, and it is good if there was still
    a bit honest ... but that's a topic for another conversation ...
    in sum;
There are many used crates ... but the question is different ... is it worth investing in them, because they are, to put it mildly,
(of course in most cases) worn out components that are Nothing or Not Worth much ...
although, of course, not all of them ... just that it is a lottery, and also not very cheap ... so I don't know if it's worth it ...
when it comes to my opinion, you already know it ... but the choice is yours ...

Thank you very much for your help. I have one more question, what do you think about the manual translation?

    changing the gearbox from automatic to manual (and vice versa) is neither that easy nor pleasant;
and thus it is not cheap ... and it comes to who will do it to you and how will it be done ...
if you do "something", it is best to have a "donor" in its entirety from which you will transfer all of them
necessary elements to change the drive from automatic to manual ... and there is a bit of it ...
the word a little ... a bit here Does not fit ... box, flywheel, clutch, driveshafts, bracket,
pedal set, console, electrical system, gear selector, etc ... and again the topic of the gearbox returns ...
manual gearbox bought from the so-called "stimulants" is the same unknown as an automatic gearbox ...
and repairing such a box does not have to mean lower costs ... and again we come to the same point ...
    is it worth?
The point is for someone who knows it, to check if it is possible to recode them without replacing them with a machine type ...
for example, some motor controllers can be re-coded relatively easily and safely to different types of drive train
and some are model-specific ... and buying used drivers is asking for trouble
(there may be problems with the police and not immediately, but e.g. if someone wants to code, let's say the key in a later
time in the service) ... if you have all the necessary elements (and from a reliable source), time, place and know how to do it ... you can ...
but if you have to buy everything separately, and you have to depend on others, I really advise against ...
see what happened (diagnose) with the box you have, and if the repair turns out to be unprofitable, then only then decide which way to go ...
because it may turn out (and hopefully it would turn out) that the repair of the one you have is the best / cheapest solution ...

Thank you very much. You mentioned earlier that you saw crates on the Allegro and EBAYU. You could toss up some classifieds links.

    allegro:

as for Ebay, there are some of them ...
    but I don't know why I can't copy the number. ads ... but that's not a problem ...
type yourself in the search engine; ebay.de.
and then on the Ebaya website just enter EYF ...
the program will do the rest itself ...

There are no shortage of chests ... but what they are worth is another topic ...

OK thank you. You know, I'll find out about these crates just in case. And I'll make a decision. The worst thing is that there are no box specialists in the area. But what I have to advise, I have already put it on olx for a cheaper sale, but whether it will pay off for me - although the willing ones are not very clear. Everyone would like for free.

Sorry to bother you again, but I have a question, is it possible to replace the boxes with a second machine at home? And do you have to adapt the new chest with a vag or something like that? I am talking about a chest with the same markings. Thank you in advance for your help.

as for the exchange, it is not very complicated, but you need to know how to do it and you must have what ...
if you haven't done it yet, and you have a garage and let's say at least a "channel" then I'm afraid it's not enough ...
    a few (non-standard) tools are needed to make it relatively comfortable to do, and a tester is also needed;
e.g. VCDS or other, but with the function of the Measured Value Block ... and needed e.g. to check the oil condition correctly
gearbox ... it is a so-called gearbox overflow control system Its level ... and with this type of control it is very important
the oil temperature in the gearbox, and this one should be checked using the aforementioned tester ...
As for the question about adaptation after exchange, there is no need (nor is it) to adopt ...
you only need to check the Oil level in the gearbox (possibly top up) and then "erase" the existing errors in the electronics
e.g. engine, gearbox and check these systems again after the test drive ... if everything is OK, i.e. the gearbox will work correctly and not
no faults in the electronics will be generated, it would be recommended to replace the filter and gear oil with New ... although the manufacturer does not provide
oil change is not Reasonable ... I do not know what they are not recommending its replacement ... but I know for sure that it is neither good nor "healthy" for the transmission ...

if you still have any questions, write to priva ...

Topic summary

The discussion revolves around the compatibility of automatic gearboxes for a 2003 Passat B5 with a 1.9 TDI AVF engine. The original poster inquires about the possibility of using a gearbox with different markings, specifically mentioning the 5HP-19 designation and EFR markings. Responses clarify that the AVF engine is typically paired with the EYF gearbox, and while alternative gearboxes may be attempted, they are not recommended by the manufacturer. The conversation also touches on the challenges of finding a suitable replacement gearbox, the potential for repairing the existing unit, and the complexities involved in converting from automatic to manual transmission. Users share links to available gearboxes on Allegro and eBay, and discuss the necessary tools and procedures for gearbox replacement.
