    Hello.
Auto bought a week ago. Focus in a combi from December 2006, BP + LPG.
I struggle in turn with the disadvantages that car has (which I counted with the purchase and unfortunately those that appeared immediately after).
The day after the purchase appeared new.
The on-board computer display (such a tiny rectangle showing also the course and tmp.) Has not gone out.
I waited for several hours and continued to smoke.
Reading a forum for a Ford says that this one is so that it fades after 10 or 15 and even after 40 minutes - no one knows why.
But he did not die at all :-(
Apparently something (some module) does not give the car go into standby mode. or something like that. And it can be, for example, a radio,

Due to the fact that one of the points on the list of faults is to restore the sound system to life (only the right front speaker plays, regardless of the balance / fade settings), I decided that it started from it.
I took out the fuse for half an hour, then patted the radio code and closed the car. It went out after a dozen or so minutes (I did not measure).
Unfortunately, it does not go out again today. I'm not smiling every few days to run to the car and reset the radio. And I will go for a few days, my wife can be grounded with a dead battery.
Once the reset did not help it is known that the fault is and you must remove it and playing with a fuse is not a remedy.

Hence, a nod to You for help. I note that none of my electronics.
This is what the radio looks like - the puki has no other ideas, I blame them,

Ps. The ELM interface courier has already brought a tool.
I have connected but no errors.

But it is not the radio that burns, but the computer's recorder does not go out. The one in the meter. The radio is dark.

I wrote that after the reset of the radio the display on the meter went out, so the radio considers it the most probable cause. I pushed it in to show what radio is sitting there.

I'm not sure if it was buried in the meter or anywhere else. I bought them on Sundays and unfortunately not from the living room ?

That colleague did not check everything immediately before buying? Now he proposes to a good electrician and let him check this clock and connect the radio.

Giving someone this is an exit. Due to the cost and difficulty in finding a professional in the area, he treats as a last resort - hence a request for help.

Regarding whether I checked before buying it, you probably make some jokes about me.
I do not believe that someone looking at the car would focus on closing the car and waiting a few minutes (apparently there are even 40 minutes - in the Ford forum I read) and watched the counter.
There are many other things to check and with the vast majority of them an open car is needed and the engine is often turned on.
I do not see any omission / negligence on my part in the inspection (in this case, because other defects unfortunately I missed despite the checklist in the head)

Try to reset the clocks (disconnect the cube from them) sometimes they like to hang up. The backlight should go out after 10 minutes.

    Hi
I had a few cars with this ailment and it was always a guilty one, the guy who repairs these radios tells me that the reason is the processor ... so the repair is not cheap ...

    Hello.
I once heard the opinion that this display works so long to inform any thief about the car's progress. It's worth stealing or not? The attack in my case shines for 10 minutes and goes out.

Disconnecting the klem solved the problem.
For how long we do not know but stopped checking. Now only in the morning going to the car first peek through the window and dark so I fall asleep for a long time but sleep so there is nothing to drill further.
    Thanks.

Topic summary

✨ The discussion revolves around a Ford Focus MK2 2.0 Duratec where the on-board computer display remains illuminated indefinitely, failing to turn off after the expected time. The owner, who recently purchased the vehicle, suspects that a malfunctioning radio may be the cause, as the display went dark after resetting the radio. Various users suggest potential solutions, including checking the radio connections, resetting the display by disconnecting it, and consulting a professional for repairs. Some users mention that this issue is common in the model, often linked to the processor in the radio. One user humorously notes that the display may serve as a deterrent for thieves by indicating the car's status.

FAQ

TL;DR: Typical Focus Mk2 clusters fade after about 10 minutes; “The backlight should go out after 10 minutes.” If it stays on, suspect the radio keeping the network awake. First try a simple reset before paying for repairs. [Elektroda, Pedros050, post #16892730]

Why it matters: This FAQ helps Focus Mk2 owners quickly stop a stuck display that can threaten battery health.

Quick Facts

How long should the Ford Focus Mk2 on-board computer display stay lit after locking?

Owners report the cluster fades after about 10 minutes, sometimes up to 40. “The backlight should go out after 10 minutes.” This delay reflects module sleep timing. If it stays on beyond that, investigate. [Elektroda, r_afaello, post #16892516]

Why doesn’t my backlight go out at all?

A faulty radio can keep the car’s network awake, preventing cluster sleep. One specialist traced repeated cases to a failed head-unit processor, which implies a non-trivial repair. Treat the radio as the first suspect. [Elektroda, marcin_70, post #16892777]

Can the radio really cause the cluster to stay on?

Yes. Pulling the radio fuse for a short time made the display go dark, confirming radio involvement. If the symptom returns, the fault is still present and needs proper repair, not just a fuse pull. [Elektroda, r_afaello, post #16892516]

Will a constantly lit display drain my battery?

It can. The owner feared a dead battery after seeing the display never sleep. Any persistent wake condition increases quiescent draw and risks morning no-starts, especially with short trips. Address the cause promptly. [Elektroda, r_afaello, post #16892516]

How do I reset the instrument cluster (clocks) to clear a hang?

Unplug the cluster connector, wait briefly, and reconnect. This simple reset often restores normal behavior. “The backlight should go out after 10 minutes” once sleep resumes. [Elektroda, Pedros050, post #16892730]

How do I test the radio as the cause without tools?

Do a fuse test: 1. Pull the radio fuse. 2. Wait about 30 minutes. 3. Refit the fuse and re-enter the code. If the display then sleeps, the radio is implicated. [Elektroda, r_afaello, post #16892516]

Can a battery-off reset fix the issue?

Yes. One owner disconnected the battery terminal and the display began sleeping normally afterward. This can clear a stuck module state, though longevity may vary. [Elektroda, r_afaello, post #17232118]

Could the instrument cluster itself be faulty?

It can hang. A contributor advised resetting the clocks by unplugging them, which often resolves the backlight issue if the cluster logic was stuck. [Elektroda, Pedros050, post #16892730]

My ELM interface shows no errors—what does that mean?

The owner’s ELM tool reported no DTCs, yet the display still stayed lit. Network wake issues may not log codes. Use ELM observations with functional tests like fuse or battery resets. [Elektroda, r_afaello, post #16892516]

Is the 10-minute illumination a theft-related feature?

One user noted a belief that the display shows mileage briefly to inform potential thieves, then turns off after about 10 minutes. Treat this as anecdotal, not official design guidance. [Elektroda, migrom, post #16939734]

What if the backlight goes out once after a reset, then the problem returns?

That pattern suggests the reset only masks an underlying fault, often the radio. Intermittent success after fuse pulls points back to the head unit for proper repair. [Elektroda, r_afaello, post #16892516]

Is repair of a faulty head unit expensive?

A radio specialist attributed the fault to the processor inside the head unit and called the repair “not cheap.” Budget accordingly or consider replacement. [Elektroda, marcin_70, post #16892777]

Should I just press the radio’s volume knob to turn it off?

Turning the radio off may not help. The issue can persist even when the radio looks dark, because the module can still keep the network awake. [Elektroda, r_afaello, post #16892557]

When should I see a professional auto electrician?

If resets fail or the symptom returns, consult a qualified electrician to test the cluster and radio wiring. This avoids repeated battery risk and guesswork. [Elektroda, Pedros050, post #16892653]
