Hello, I have a problem. I bought a scooter acid battery, but it is a bit too high so I can't close the cover. Here I would like to ask if nothing will happen when it is lying on its side? It is an ordinary 12 V lead-acid battery with a capacity of 5 ah. I was looking for an answer for a long time, but I did not come across any answer that would satisfy me, some say that it is possible, others that you can, but only gel, and others on the contrary. I count on your help, thanks in advance. ;)

@ kowalsky34 It will happen - the electrolyte will leak out immediately :!: and you will destroy the scooter. AGM (gel) batteries can operate in basically any position, except for the cover downwards, although this is also not recommended.

I was just thinking about it, but recently I left the battery lying down, it just tipped over by accident and it stayed that way. When I got back there was no leakage. I mean more if its location will have a negative impact on its performance or its loading, as the targets may be partially exposed. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. ;)

The plates, not the cells, which are not immersed in the electrolyte, oxidize and the battery capacity decreases. Has not leaked? You were just lucky. :D

Okay, i.e. the battery remains in the trunk, thanks ;)

I think you should provide the battery model. Ev. by "acid" you mean you had to put electrolyte into it?
Maybe you just have a gel ... I had one in my scooter.

Let me remind you that a gel battery is also an acid battery.

Yes, the electrolyte was poured into the battery, it is exactly UNIBAT CB5L-B / AL 12V 5 AH 65CCA

Well, there is a necessary work position vertical . :|

Topic summary

The discussion revolves around the safety and performance implications of positioning a 12V 5Ah lead-acid scooter battery on its side. Users express concerns about potential electrolyte leakage and battery damage. One participant notes that while their battery remained leak-free when tipped, it could lead to decreased capacity due to oxidation of exposed plates. It is emphasized that traditional lead-acid batteries should be kept upright, while AGM (gel) batteries can be positioned in various orientations. The specific battery model mentioned is UNIBAT CB5L-B, which requires a vertical position for optimal performance.
