Choosing Between BAOFENG UV-5R vs. BAOFENG UV-82: Comparing 8W Models and Features

Best answers

Which is better: the Baofeng UV-5R or UV-82, and do 8W versions of these radios really exist?

The UV-82 is the better choice here, and 8W versions do exist for both the UV-5R and the UV-82. The UV-5R HP is described as a 3-step model with 1W, 4W, and 8W output, and the UV-82 HP is also listed with increased power up to 8W [#18084730] However, the power increase is said to give only a small real-world range improvement because it is not linear; a better antenna is likely to help more [#18084730] One reply simply recommends the UV-82 if you must choose between the two [#18154044] Another reply also says to take the 82 rather than the 8W claim alone [#18152284]

Or maybe you will also consider the Baofeng T-57? The radio is similar in functionality to the UV-5R, but waterproof (meets the requirements of IP67). If you need to go fishing or in the forest, moisture resistance will come in handy. As for power, these types of radios have a catalog power level of 4 W and 5 W. There is a Baofeng UV-5R HP version with 8 W (High Power version), which is equipped with a three-stage output power control (1 W, 4 W and 8 watts). There is also Baofeng UV-82 HP with power increased to 8 W.

Putting aside legality of use of the equipment and Legal issues and the health impact of the antenna and the transmitter, the sense of increasing the power in this type of devices is debatable. First of all, the scale is not linear, so this "doubling of power" will practically not be felt within the range. So instead of operating with a higher transmitter power, it is much easier to obtain positive results with a better antenna. What are these distances? I suspect that you can "handle" them with a simple PMR set without breaking the law and risking big problems.

Why are you immediately breaking the law? The appropriate frequency license can be purchased and used.

Do not suggest these 8W, because it is a drink on water within the meaning of the range.
    Take 82.

I will step on the topic. I want to buy the UV-82 version. What model to choose because alledrogo has different versions of V4, HT, PT etc. does it matter?

This T57 also has such a badly resolved switching between VFO and MEMEORY as the UV-82?

Depends on what this radio is supposed to be, but from the chinolettes I had, I would write from the worst to the best:

    1. Baofeng 5
    2. Baofeng GT3TP (8W and a much better housing than the five)
    3. Wouxun KGUV6D - very decent
    4. TYT-THUV3R - despite the power of 2W, it finally has the functions that the radio should have
    5. ZASTONE ZT-2R - the best Chinese I have ever had. It cannot be compared with its predecessors - because it is a copy of the Yaesu UV2R. But the price was 85USD ...

Topic summary

✨ The discussion centers on choosing between the Baofeng UV-5R and UV-82 models, both of which are claimed to have an 8W output. Users clarify that while the standard power levels for these radios are typically 4W to 5W, there are high-power versions available: the UV-5R HP and UV-82 HP, which can output 8W. The effectiveness of increased power is debated, with suggestions that better antennas may yield more significant improvements in range than simply increasing transmitter power. Some users recommend the UV-82 for its features, while others mention alternatives like the Baofeng T-57, which offers waterproofing. Legal considerations regarding frequency use and licensing are also discussed.
