My windshield squeaks terribly when opening and closing. Especially when it is hot outside. The mechanic recommended that I replace the whole mechanism. I don't know if it's not a matter of friction against these door seals. Maybe it's possible to lubricate it with something, to strain it to try. I just don't know what with, so that it doesn't in turn dirty the glass.

Maybe some silicone grease or, for example, Vaseline.

And won't it leave greasy marks on the glass? Generally when it's wet it squeaks less because it has a slip, so I think something like this would help. A lubricant like WD-40?

If it leaves a mark on the edge it's probably not a problem. Anyway, it has to be applied in moderation and not splashed around ;) WD-40 is also greasy, but I would be afraid to apply it to gaskets.

What kind of car/what kind of window lift mechanism is it. Either way, I'd rather listen to a mechanic, because if it's a cable mechanism (VW group for example) then the cable will soon break, and lubrication will help for a while. The nylon rollers squeak, not the glass, and they squeak because they have rubbed in and/or corroded their pins. If it's a Skoda, I suggest you put up the extra 50 zloty and buy the whole mechanism, not just the guides, and save yourself the trouble of stretching and riveting the thing.

WD-40 is a petroleum distillate (paraffin) and should be kept away from rubber parts!

Some glass cleaner has also come to my mind. I know it's for a while, but when it's wet it doesn't squeak.

As for the make, it's a Renault Megane II Convertible Coupe. I don't know what it's like at the front, but the rear windows do swish a bit and there you have to buy the whole mechanism with guides to replace the motor. I think one costs something like £1,500. Both at the rear are in poor shape already reconditioned. At the front, I don't know what it's like to replace them, but it could be similar, and probably more expensive. Maybe something used, but generally these cars are not too many. I wanted to sell it last year, but the idea of building a house and buying a plot of land was born, so I held off. With that said, I prefer to limit myself to replacing essentials.

The slides alone cost £120, the whole mechanism (with backing plate) £200.... There is some of this on Allegro.

I also had a squeak and it diminished when wet, so I didn't try anything but washed the windows on both sides and the problem disappeared.

I have indeed seen a few on Allegro. The rear ones for the convertible unfortunately only for the III, but the front ones there were a few auctions for the II at prices like you write.

They were already washed but I will try some of that thick shampoo.

For me, in the heat, it squeaks so badly that my brain lashes out.

In my dad's Octavia they were also squeaking.... I cleaned, lubricated and it helped for a few days, maybe a week. When it rained, the window would go quietly, when it was warm and dry it would squeal or even jam. Eventually the cable broke, I replaced the mechanism and it's been quiet ever since.

Topic summary

The discussion revolves around a squeaky windshield issue in a Renault Megane II Convertible Coupe, particularly in hot weather. The user is considering lubrication options instead of replacing the entire window lift mechanism as suggested by a mechanic. Various lubricants are discussed, including silicone grease, Vaseline, and WD-40, with caution advised against using WD-40 on rubber gaskets due to its petroleum distillate content. Some participants suggest that cleaning the windows or using a thick shampoo may alleviate the squeaking. The conversation highlights the potential for temporary relief through lubrication, but also the risk of long-term damage to the window mechanism if not addressed properly.
