    Hi,

My goal is to connect the desktop computer to the Dell WD19 docking station, to which the laptop is also connected - so that I can efficiently switch between shared equipment (monitors, keyboard with mouse, speakers). Now I have to reconnect the cables every time.

Currently, I only have a laptop connected to the docking station - it connects via a USB-c -> USB-c cable.

I don`t have a USB-C port on my desktop computer, but I do have a free PCI-E port if necessary.

Do I need to buy another intermediate device for such a system, to which both computers would be connected and which would then connect to the docking station (if so, what kind), or can it be done differently?

    Hello,
I`m afraid it won`t work because you just want to have a peripheral switch from this station, there will probably be a conflict if two devices want to control it at the same time, as long as the station recognizes any control from an unknown source.

And an additional problem, as you wrote, you don`t have a USB-C port, so how do you want to control it? PC-e/USB-c adapter?

I don`t really need to use two devices at the same time - I generally use a laptop while working and a desktop one after hours. I even accept the option that I will have to reconnect the USB-C cable between the port on the laptop and the port on the stationary (it is always more convenient than reconnecting > 5 different cables).

Exactly - when it comes to the issue of the USB-C port, I was thinking about a PCI-E -> USB-C adapter. Is there any way to verify whether it will work this way? At first glance, I have doubts, because in a laptop this USB-C port seems to play a slightly different role - the connected USB-C cable transmits communication with the peripherals to the laptop, and additionally, power is supplied through it.

I saw a similar topic on some foreign forum and someone wrote about connecting both computers to a switch, which was then connected to the docking station. But now I can`t find this thread, but it also seems that there was no mention of connectivity via the USB-C port. What device could this be and could something like this work in this case?

It seemed to me that using two computers (work-home) on one desk must be quite a common problem and I was convinced that reconnecting cables would be a temporary solution. However, what motivated me to pursue the topic further was the cable from the new speakers, which connects seamlessly to the station next to the monitors, but is not long enough to reach the desktop computer standing 2 meters from the desk. :D .

    Hello,
does the monitor only have one input? there are rather few of them, separate input to each computer and switching with one button.
Keyboard and mouse - if USB is wireless, switching receivers is probably not a problem, I do it myself.
Speakers, this may be a bit complicated, maybe if the monitor has an audio output, use it.
    These are temporary suggestions/solutions.

Thanks for looking into the topic.

Ultimately, the problem sort of solved itself.

I took a monitor from work with several USB outputs and an audio output. I connected it via USB-B to my desktop computer. So currently, to change the working environment (keyboard, mouse, portable drives and audio), it is enough to plug in one USB plug.

As for communication via the docking station, the topic is still open - if anyone else needs information ;) .

Hello. I know it`s been almost a year but I have a question. Do you have a network cable connected to the docking station? If so, what are the LEDs at the network socket and what is your connection speed?
I`m asking because I have a problem with mine. Whatever cable I choose, I have a supposedly 1Gb connection, but both LEDs are orange and the manual says that for 1Gb there should be one green one. Well, when downloading I achieve speeds of about 1Gb, but when sending only about 100Mb.

Dell XPS 9570 has Thunderbolt 3 and is fully compatible with this station. I`ve checked before. Thanks.
Today I checked older Ethernet drivers but it was the same on all of them. It seems that the fault is somewhere in the laptop itself, because when I turn it off, the LEDs have the right colors. So one is green (1Gb negotiated) and orange for activity. But when the computer starts, both are orange.

Topic summary

The discussion revolves around connecting a desktop computer without a USB-C port to a Dell WD19 docking station, which is currently used with a laptop. The user seeks a solution to switch shared peripherals (monitors, keyboard, mouse, speakers) without constantly reconnecting multiple cables. Suggestions include using a PCI-E to USB-C adapter, though concerns about compatibility and functionality arise. An alternative solution was found by connecting a monitor with multiple USB outputs and an audio output directly to the desktop, allowing for easier switching with a single USB connection. The topic remains open for further exploration regarding the docking station's capabilities.
