Troubleshooting: Smart Bulb Wi-Fi Connection Issues on 2.4GHz Band, Tested with Hotspot

Best answers

Why won’t my smart bulbs connect to my regular 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi even though they pair successfully through a phone hotspot?

If the bulbs connect through a phone hotspot, the bulbs themselves are probably fine and the problem is most likely the router/app setup or pairing mode, not the phone. Make sure the pairing app has full location access and permission to detect nearby devices; one user reported that these two Android permissions were enough for Tuya/Smart Life to find and add the bulb, even on a 5 GHz network [#20359870] Also reset the bulb into pairing mode by switching it off and on three times until it starts flashing before trying to add it again [#21111925] If the home router is the blocker, try adding the bulb on a guest Wi‑Fi network or separate band and see whether it joins there [#19868198] Another suggestion was to check the router’s Wi‑Fi security settings and test WPA/WPA2 or a different mode to see whether the bulb can connect [#21852853]

Hello. I recently purchased smart bulbs. I can not connect them to the phone, I did everything according to the attached instructions without effects. In the end, I tested them by connecting through the hot spot created on the second phone where they connected without any problem. And here the question is, what could be wrong that they do not want to connect via the normal internet. I connect on the 2.4G band.

A model would be useful, a few other information would not hurt either.

Bulb model: Kobi Smart LED GU10 5W RGB

What else information? All I know is that this is not a light bulb or telephone problem. I tested on another phone with the same result and only creating a hot spot and connecting to it gave the effect and it worked without any problems.

If the bulbs connect to the hot spot on the phone (which I assume you had at hand), it means that they work and I would look for the problem elsewhere.
I bet on Wifi. Perhaps one of the devices (light bulb or phone) was not connected to the same wifi network all the time when adding the device to the app

So I know as much as before. I just don't know why there is a problem with the wifi. The bulbs need to be paired so they do not connect immediately to the first better wifi, only in the application you need to select the network and then they start to connect, I made sure several times that the wifi was selected properly (2.4 band).

The simplest mistake that comes to my mind is maybe you entered the Wifi password incorrectly on the app?

Well, I have entered the password so many times that I already enter it from memory, but it is correct because I always check it. I managed to connect one bulb, but when unscrewed and screwed in it was described as "off the mains". As if she did not see wifi suddenly, although I have a router in my room.

There is one more application that looks identical to Tuya Smart. Why not try with her?
    It's called Smart Life.

Are you trying to add bulbs manually or by car? After looking at the photos, I played with my dimmers. I noticed that in automatic mode, the app does not detect devices. Maybe that's the problem

Set to WPA / WPA2, but unfortunately I will not check because I returned the bulbs.

Unfortunately, I got the same thing. After the purchase, I connected my polux bulb to the home router without any problems, but at some point, it ceased to be seen by Tuya. I tried both connection methods, and the bulb does not want to reconnect. I set up a hotspot on my phone and connected from there with no problem. There must be something on the router-bulb line wrong, just what? I will not change the key to WEP because it is not secure encryption without it. Is it possible to somehow remove this device from the router's memory? I suspect that there may be a problem here. I do not know about my router, but the Ubiquiti that is on the way, I know that it remembers the device. Maybe it does not want to assign a new IP to the bulb.

When the IP address lease time in the DHCP service expires, the router will "forget it". You can also "release" it manually.
    gustdelf wrote:

What does ubiquiti mean? Access Point to WiFi? If so, it probably doesn't have DHCP service enabled, because that's what the router should do.
Ubi's "remembering" has nothing to do with it.

I don't mean to be malicious, but adding this type of shit to your home network is a bad idea - the problem of switching to WEP is just one of many.
Turn on customer isolation in Ubi for sure.

Set an additional wifi band for guests in the router and connect the phone and bulb to them - it will work, if it works, connect the phone again to the normal wifi band and the bulb will stay in the guest band. You will be able to control the bulb without any problems

I read at the top and nothing helped, I was about to return them but ...

-App location must have access to full location (not just while running)
-The device (Android for me) must have unchecked permission to locate devices nearby in the settings of the pairing application

Then the app easily found and I could add a bulb-type device
    (even in 5 GHz network)

So much setting, playing and it was enough to give these two permissions to the application (for me on android 13) mentioned in the above post and everything works without a problem ...
    Thanks master you are great!

You don't read the instructions attached to the lighting.
I had the same problem today.
The problem was not with the wifi or even with the device (phone), pull the plug and switch the plug on 3 times, after the 3rd try the lights should flash, then you can connect the device to the lsc without any problem. Greetings, goodbye.

With me everything worked without a problem until. The moment I changed my router from UPC to Play BOX NET router HFC (KAONMEDIA CO., LTD) everything went haywire.
The problem is that the app (Smart Life or Tuya) detect the smart LEDs with no problem but the add process takes several minutes and fails.
When I do a hotspot from the other phone then the add process goes through without a problem.
Adding location permissions etc doesn't help (by the way, through the hotspot everything works and I don't change the app permissions)
the router is definitely to blame, but I don't know what else I can set there to make the process of adding smart LEDs successful.
I also have the same problem with the air purifier, the air conditioner and the Roborock hoover.
Everything worked without a problem under the router from UPC, why the hell did I change it!?

    >>21849787 you have too long a router name, or forbidden characters in the name, these Chinese spy modules have limitations because they do a copy, paste and if it copies "long_router_name" it pastes "long_router_name" and that is already a different name and it can't connect

in the sense of the SSID name?
Unfortunately that's not it, I had a "dot" in the name, but shortening the name didn't help
with the hotspot from my mobile I have a very long name and no problem,
the connection to the LED detects, but the addition.... takes a good 3-4 minutes and fails
on the previous router the adding process took 5 seconds max
with a hotspot from another mobile it takes a bit longer about 15sec but the device adds itself.
The worst thing is that when I turn off the hotspot and lose the ability to manage the LED, it either goes into pairing mode (blinking) or shines at maximum power with a deadly light (KANLUX)
in a word, I am going back to the traditional "nonSmart" because it has been going on too long....

Check your hashing and switch to WPA or WPA2 for testing

FAQ

TL;DR: Most pairing failures resolve by entering pairing mode with 3 power toggles—"after the 3rd try the lights should flash"—then re‑add the bulb in the app. This FAQ helps Tuya/Smart Life users fix 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi issues that worked over a hotspot. [Elektroda, MironTV, post #21111925]

Why it matters: It gives quick, proven fixes for smart bulbs that won’t join home Wi‑Fi but connect via a phone hotspot.

Quick Facts

How do I fix a smart bulb that won’t connect to 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi but works on my hotspot?

Create a 2.4 GHz guest SSID on your router. Temporarily connect your phone and the bulb to this guest network. Pair the bulb in Tuya or Smart Life. After pairing, reconnect your phone to your normal Wi‑Fi. The bulb can stay on the guest SSID and remain controllable. This avoids steering and onboarding quirks that block pairing on the main SSID. [Elektroda, andylarkin25, post #19868198]

Why does the bulb connect to a hotspot but fail on my router?

Hotspots are simple: no client isolation and fresh DHCP. Home routers can add client isolation, MAC filters, or stale DHCP leases. Release the old DHCP lease or reboot the router to force a new IP. “When the IP address lease time in the DHCP service expires, the router will ‘forget it’.” If using an AP, let the router handle DHCP. [Elektroda, adwlodar, post #19510383]

How do I reset a Tuya/LSC/Kobi/Polux smart bulb into pairing mode?

Use this 3‑step reset:
  1. Turn the bulb off.
  2. Toggle power on‑off three times quickly.
  3. After the 3rd toggle, wait for flashing, then add it in the app. Flashing confirms pairing mode and is required before onboarding. [Elektroda, MironTV, post #21111925]

Should I switch my router to WEP to pair a bulb?

No. WEP is obsolete and insecure. Keep WPA2‑PSK/AES or WPA3 enabled. If pairing still fails, adjust onboarding steps or SSIDs instead of weakening security. Separate IoT onto its own SSID for safety. [NIST, 2017]

The Tuya/Smart Life app doesn’t auto‑detect my bulb. What should I try?

Use manual add instead of Auto Scan. In Tuya/Smart Life, pick Add Device > Lighting, then follow instructions. Auto discovery can miss devices, while manual pairing often succeeds. Keep your phone on the intended Wi‑Fi during onboarding. Reset the bulb to flashing mode first. [Elektroda, Stitch12, post #19299428]

The app says my bulb is “off the mains” after I unscrewed it. How do I fix it?

This status appeared right after a power cycle for users. Reset the bulb to pairing mode and add it again in the app. Place the bulb closer to the router during pairing. That restores control after the interruption. [Elektroda, Neaxx, post #19293151]

Do my phone and bulb need to be on the same Wi‑Fi during pairing?

Yes. Keep both on the same 2.4 GHz SSID during onboarding. If either device switches networks mid‑pairing, the add process can fail. Disable auto‑switching on your phone to avoid interruptions. [Elektroda, Stitch12, post #19292622]

Can my phone be on 5 GHz during pairing a 2.4 GHz bulb?

It can work. Users report success after granting Location and Nearby Devices permissions, even with the phone on 5 GHz. The bulb still joins 2.4 GHz. If discovery fails, temporarily connect your phone to 2.4 GHz. [Elektroda, Marcin_Www, post #20359870]

How do I clear or refresh a bulb’s IP address on the router?

Open your router’s DHCP page and release the bulb’s lease, or wait for the lease to expire. Then power‑cycle the bulb and re‑add it. If you use an access point, leave DHCP service enabled only on the main router. [Elektroda, adwlodar, post #19510383]

Why does the app request Location and Nearby Devices permissions?

Android gates Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth scanning behind Location, and device discovery behind Nearby Devices. Without these permissions, pairing apps cannot discover bulbs. Enable both permissions for the Tuya/Smart Life app, then retry pairing. [Android Developers, 2023]

How does the bulb receive my Wi‑Fi password during setup?

During provisioning, the phone app transmits your SSID and password locally using a protocol like SmartConfig. The bulb listens in monitor mode and joins your 2.4 GHz network after receiving credentials. This step is local, not via the internet. [Espressif, 2020]

Smart Life vs Tuya Smart: which app should I use?

They are very similar. If one app struggles, try the other. Smart Life looks identical to Tuya Smart, and pairing flows are the same. Switching apps is quick and sometimes helps during onboarding. [Elektroda, Stitch12, post #19293210]

My bulb worked before, disappeared from Tuya, and won’t reconnect. What should I check?

Focus on router‑bulb communication. If a hotspot works, the router is involved. Keep modern security (avoid WEP) and check IP assignment issues. Consider clearing remembered device entries, then retry pairing. [Elektroda, gustdelf, post #19510354]

Is enabling client isolation a good idea for IoT bulbs?

Yes. Isolate IoT devices from your main LAN for safety. You still control bulbs via cloud apps, but they can’t reach your PCs. “Turn on customer isolation in Ubi for sure.” Place bulbs on a guest SSID. [Elektroda, adwlodar, post #19510383]
