I want to buy a used polishing or exhibition laptop. I found a Dell Latitude 6540 on the Internet on Erla and Morele. Which one would you recommend? With i5 4200M or i7 4800MQ processor? My friend has an i5 but he also worked on an i7 and he told me that it wasn`t very good. Does it make sense to pay extra for an i7? From what I learned from the seller, the i7 has a 4600M processor. The price difference between i5 and i7 is PLN 300. laptops are exhibition.

The i7, of course. This i5 is pre-dawn junk on 2 cores.

I just looked in the specs that it's dual core. SSD capacity of 256GB. Just with which RAM to take? 8GB or 16GB? Price difference of 100PLN. Is 8GB enough or not enough?

For everyday use I think 8GB is still sufficient. If someone needs to have 50 tabs open in the browser at the same time, this may not be enough, but for all other uses it is still enough.

It depends on what you want to use it for. If you want movies, music, internet, then 8GB is ok. If you want to play more, then you need to think either about other hardware or more RAM, it depends what you want to do with it.

On an old Toshiba laptop, the casing broke and the hinges ripped out. So that I am forced to buy a new laptop. It is to be used mainly for running bills. As well as watching drone videos which are in 4K quality. Apart from that watching the net Facebook, Messenger, YouTube and the like. Games do not interest me. I have agreed with the seller that he will put me a 4800MQ quad processor in the price instead of what is 4600M.

Do you have a 4K monitor/TV that you connect to? Because you won`t find a laptop with a 4K matrix in this budget.
What`s the point of playing the video if you won`t notice the difference?

    I ordered a Dell Latitude E6540 8GB i7 FHD 256SSD 15.6" laptop. Polizing, class A. I paid PLN 1,000 for it. I agreed with the seller that the price includes replacing the laptop`s processor with a quad-core 4800MQ. Because it has a dual-core 4600M.

    You`ve been pretty screwed.

Sosarek gave one option, much better and newer, and apart from Latitudas, you can get a Thinkpad for i5 8250U for about PLN 1,000.

I don`t see you specifying the requirements anywhere, so how do we know what you require?
This does not change the fact that you purchased something worth less than half that amount.

It doesn`t matter, the 15.6 will also be available in similar money.
There is no reason to pay PLN 1,000 for 10-year-old, emergency, power-hungry equipment, especially since for PLN 1,500 you can get modern laptops with the latest CPUs (2021-2023), new, with a full warranty - of course, worse made than the Latitude and sometimes a little weaker than the strongest ones from 6-7 years ago, but if you look hard enough, you can also find i3 11th gen or Ryzen 3 5000 series.

FAQ

TL;DR: The i5‑4200M here is 2 cores; “This i5 is pre‑dawn junk on 2 cores.” Prefer i7 or newer‑gen if you multitask or view 4K; for light use, 8GB is fine. [Elektroda, OPservator, post #20897922]

Why it matters: For shoppers weighing pawnshop or ex‑lease business laptops under ~PLN 1,500, this condenses real‑world pricing, spec trade‑offs, and warranty tips.

Quick Facts

Should I pick the i7‑4800MQ over the i5‑4200M in a used Latitude E6540?

Pick the i7 if you multitask or handle media. One reply says, “This i5 is pre‑dawn junk on 2 cores.” For invoices, email, and streaming, the i5 can suffice. Weigh cost, condition, and warranty over small CPU differences when budgets are tight. [Elektroda, OPservator, post #20897922]

Is paying PLN 300 more for the i7 upgrade reasonable?

The thread shows a PLN 300 gap between i5 and i7 options. If you plan to keep the laptop longer or expect heavier workloads, the uplift is reasonable. For light office use, consider putting that PLN 300 into RAM, SSD, or a newer‑gen platform instead. [Elektroda, hornet2, post #20897826]

How much RAM do I need: 8GB or 16GB?

8GB still covers everyday tasks well. Around 50 browser tabs can push past that. How‑To: 1. List your daily apps and typical tab counts. 2. Check memory usage while you work. 3. If usage nears 8GB or you keep 50+ tabs, pick 16GB. [Elektroda, badboy84, post #20898015]

Will a Dell E6540 play 4K drone footage smoothly?

Its Haswell‑era graphics lack hardware HEVC decode. 4K HEVC, especially 10‑bit, often stutters or drops frames. Use H.264 sources, hardware‑accelerated players, or create proxies for smooth editing. “HEVC decode arrived with later Intel generations.” Edge case: 10‑bit HEVC is most problematic. [“Intel Quick Sync Video”]

Do I need a 4K screen to see the benefit of 4K footage?

Yes. Without a 4K monitor or TV, the video downscales to your panel’s resolution. One reply noted you won’t notice the difference on a non‑4K screen. Connect a 4K display if detail matters to you. [Elektroda, OPservator, post #20899416]

Is PLN 1,000 a fair price for an ex‑lease E6540 A‑grade?

Several replies said it’s too high. One stated the unit is “worth less than half that amount.” Re‑check market prices and consider cancelling if the seller won’t adjust. Compare against newer models listed by others. [Elektroda, sosarek, post #20899756]

Should I cancel and choose a newer Latitude 5400 or ThinkPad instead?

A reply referenced a Latitude 5400 i7‑8665U deal and advised cancelling. The same post highlighted ThinkPads with i5‑8250U around PLN 1,000. Newer CPUs bring better efficiency, support, and often similar prices. [Elektroda, ITSpec., post #20899600]

14‑inch vs 15.6‑inch — which should I choose?

Pick by your priorities. The OP declined a 14‑inch because they wanted 15.6‑inch. Go 14‑inch for portability and smaller desks. Choose 15.6‑inch if you value a larger workspace and full‑size keyboard layouts. [Elektroda, hornet2, post #20899741]

Is a pawnshop deal with a 12‑month warranty worth it versus buying new?

Balance warranty against platform age and value. One reply noted new laptops near PLN 1,500 with full warranty are available. If a pawnshop offers 12 months, compare coverage, battery wear, and return terms against new‑unit benefits. [Elektroda, ITSpec., post #20899759]

Is swapping i5‑4600M for i7‑4800MQ on an E6540 practical?

Yes. The seller in the thread agreed to install a 4800MQ instead of a 4600M at the price. Confirm the upgrade in writing and request a stress‑test report. That helps catch thermal or stability issues before shipment. [Elektroda, hornet2, post #20898204]

Is a 256GB SSD enough for invoices and some 4K footage?

The listed units include a 256GB SSD. That easily fits Windows, office apps, and invoices. 4K drone footage consumes space quickly, so plan external storage or a second drive if available in the chassis. [Elektroda, hornet2, post #20897934]

Will an older quad‑core MQ laptop use more power and run hotter?

Yes. One reply called such 10‑year‑old hardware “power‑hungry” and suggested modern CPUs instead. Expect shorter battery life and more audible fans during sustained loads. Prioritize newer‑gen CPUs if mobility matters. [Elektroda, ITSpec., post #20899759]

Quick checklist before paying for a used business laptop listing

How‑To: 1. Target at least 8th‑gen CPUs (e.g., i5‑8250U) around PLN 1,000. 2. Get a written warranty and clear return window. 3. Price‑check against the Latitude 5400‑class deals and similar ThinkPads mentioned. [Elektroda, ITSpec., post #20899600]
