Incandecent light dimmer switch to a vacuum motor?

I am trying to make a variable speed blower; by configuring a light dimmer switch to a vacuum motor, the motor is a 120 volt ac the light dimmer switch is for 110V. I have hooked them up in series and it just turns the motor on and off doesn't give its variable speeds.

any ideas would be appreciated!

I suspect the dimmer Triac shorted when you tried to control the motor. I would connect the dimmer to a lamp to see if it still dims correctly.
