I am working with LCD 16x2. I was having trouble getting it to work mainly because I thought that I could use PWM instead of Potentiometer. Is it the correct way to do it? Or could there be something else wrong with my circuit?

That can work if you add a lowpass filter, (1 uF capacitor between Vee and Vss and 10K resistor between Vee and Arduino)
