WE ARE A COATING MANUFACTURING FACILITY AND WE'RE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE POWER FACTOR CORRECTION.
WE HAVE A 1,500KVA 3PHASE PAD MOUNTED MAIN TRANSFORMER AS A STEP DOWN TRANSFORMER, 12,470V - 480V FROM THE INCOMING POWER LINE, EVEN THOUGH OUR POWER DEMAND IS AROUND 250KW.
THE THING IS WE INSTALLED A PFC CAPACITOR BANK ON THE SECONDARY OF THE TRANSFORMER (NEXT TO THE MAIN BREAKER) AND THEORETICALLY WITH THE CAPACITORS CONNECTED THE DISPLAY READS A PF OF .98, BUT THE UTILITY KEEPS CHARGING US FOR A 0.88 POWER FACTOR. MY THOUGHT IS THAT SUCH LOW PF COMES FROM THE REACTIVE POWER THE MAIN TRANSFORMER IS DEMANDING, BUT WE HAVE NO WAY OF MEASURING THAT. I'M THINKING ABOUT ASKING THE UTILITY COMPANY FOR A LOAD PROFILE OF OUR FACILITY AND TAKE THE READINGS OF THE NIGHT HOURS TO DETERMINE THE REACTIVE POWER OF THE TRANSFORMER GIVEN THAT WE HAVE NO PRODUCTION AT THAT TIME.
