Has FM transmission over a wired connection been explored?

I had a curiosity pop into my head about sending data over a wired channel using frequency modulation instead of square pulses. I have tried multiple different queries online but came up with nothing.

Here is my actual question:

Has FM transmission of data over a WIRED connection ever been researched?
If so, could someone direct me to a resource so I can peruse it?

First of all, I'd like to ask what would be your possible application for this? Secondly, if you want to transfer data, wouldn't FSK a much better approach? But it could still be possible to use FM transmission over a wired connection if it is audio application. It is what we called FM synthesis.

Never the less, you can still pursue this research but in my opinion, I guess it would be much of a waste to use FM over wired.

Yes, fsk would probably be favorable. I guess I was really trying to ask about is the general encoding of information in the frequency spectrum ( like what is done with wireless communication) over a wired connection.

My reason for inquiring about this is mostly curiosity but I could see an applications for this.

If data was transmitted through a shielded system via wire using fsk, then that data could be sent in a parallel-ized manner by putting each bit in a different frequency band.
