Hello all,
I'm after a little advice from people in industry regarding whether I should do a masters or not?
I'm 31, an Approved Electrician with 8 years (industrial & commercial) experience, I recently completed my HND (distinction) and am currently in my 2nd year of a BEng Electrical Engineering degree at the University of Sheffield. I'm hoping to develop a career within either the power, rail, or heavy engineering sectors, and although I'm not 100% decided, I'm swayed towards working in industry rather than the consulting side of the engineering trade.
I'm trying to determine whether the best route to take would be to continue my studies for an MEng, or whether to complete the BEng and then move straight into work. I understand that MEng gives the easiest route to becoming chartered, but am also aware that you can become chartered with relevant experience (though this may take longer) and that I could also complete a masters at a later date (possibly part time?).
Would employers prefer me to have a masters?
Or would it be better to start learning relevant, job specific skills through employment?
Do all industries want their engineers to be chartered?
Some have suggested to me that due to my experience, having an MEng might put me in a slightly unusual employment category - that maybe a traditional grad scheme wouldn't be the best placement for me? Thoughts?
If anybody working in industry could provide any insight into industry's preferences, it would be most appreciated.
Kind regards,
Kevin
