Resistance on the multi meter.

Hello everyone.

I have a question regarding resistance incase of a short circuit.

I am trying to find a range that while measuring a resistance for a loop on the multimeter ... what range should be considered safe so we can depict if there is a short circuit or not? Consider circuits are isolated from the device and from the breaker side. Is there any specific standard where i can refer to?

Generally, what i would do to determine if the loop is short, I would do continuity test. Most multimeters have this feature. If your referring to measuring a resistor or resistance value of a shorted component/device, first of all it must not be powered on. Second, it must not be attached yet to the circuit since you'll get the resistance of the whole circuit. That would differ on the component your measuring resistance with. Well, a rule of thumb in multimeters is to start with the highest range the meter can handle just for safety.

Mr Kiven has pointed out a very important thing switching off the power during resistance measurement ,safety is the first and most important measure any one should take care while carrying out any type of electrical and electronics work, not only that it can make a lot of difference in the resistance value, follow his instructions he is guiding you in the right path.
