Hi

I noticed these coils (see attached photo) on power lines in our area and was wondering what their purpose is? (maybe stress relief on the cables?)

I believe they are there to dampen vibrational waves being transmitted down the power lines. Wind blowing across the wires can excite the wires into resonate vibration which causes stress in the wires and the insulators that mount them to the poles.

They are electrocuted snakes that managed to slither up the poles.

Sounds plausible, would also explain why they aren't found on all lines.

The purpose of these "coils" is to help birds (like whooping cranes" to avoid the wires. Some places are indispensable because of the route of migration, others no so much.
