Research Topic Ideas for MSc in Electrical Engineering: HV/LV Switchgear Protection

Can you please assist me, I am considering to do my
Postgraduate programme (Masters in Electrical Eng.), but the problem is that I
do not have any topic at hand that I can move forward with in doing the programme. I am
interested in a topic that is related to HV/LV  switchgear protection.

I've been out of that field for forty years. In the last twenty years, the control and protection of the electrical grid has been shifting from purely electromagnetomechanical controls to electronic controls. The existing electric-power generators (except solar cells) all pass the power through rotating shafts (which have inherent short-term energy storage in their rotational inertia). The existing controls for the electrical grid were built assuming rotating-shaft primary power sources. As solar cells and batteries start to be used on electrical grids, the control and protection problems change. Thus, there should be lots to study. A few universities in the United States offer degrees in electric-power systems, but I don't recall their names.

In recent years there has been a number of injuries around high voltage switchgear dure to flashovers, otherwise known as "arc flashes".  The topic of how to detect or prevent arc flashes might be an interesting area to investigate.  Also, the personal protective gear to protect workers from injury due to arc flash is rapidly evolving.
Another possibility is that since new alternative energy production systems are starting to come online, the role of high voltage switchgear is evolving to interface with a number of new energy storage technologies, like Tesla's World's Largest Battery and molten salt storage, among others.  This could be a hot topic in the coming years.-Rick

Also worthy of research is transfer schemes for switching from alternative energy sources to traditional or battery power for best efficiency and use of resources.
