In the old days of Nokia (remember them?) phones, particularly I think the venerable 5110, you could buy a device that plugged in and could (as I remember) both send and receive SMSs to send alarms and switch things on and off. Those days are gone, but if you're technically inclined then you can build your own. You can get Cellular modems which offer a standard serial interface and you can access the functions using AT commands (remember them too?

including sending and receiving SMSs. You'd hve to get something to communicate with it, be it a PC or something like an Arduino or a Raspberry Pi. How this would help you depends very much on your levels of technical expertise with hardware and programming abilities. It would be a nice project if you're up to it.
