Best Key Card Switch Brands for Hotel Room: 1.5HP AC, 2000W Heater, 48W Lighting

Hello everyone,

I am working on electrical design for an hotel building.I want to incorporate energy saving to the design using KEY CARD SWITCH for each hotel room. I need a key card switch that has the capacity to accommodate:
1.   1.5hp air condition 1pc
2. 2000W water heater 1p
3. 12w LED lighting point 4pcs
I need your recommendations on product brand/capacity that can take care of this. Thank you for your contributions.

Clipsal in Australia where I am offer this 250V 16A switch.  That would just about do what you want - at 240V a 2000W water heater will take 8.3A of that.If you are working with 110V  you'd be best using the switch to drive a contactor to switch your load.In fact I'd be tempted to anyway, I'd be wary of having that much power so near my guests.If you go and talk to some of your local electrical distributors I am sure they would have similar products.

Our single phase voltage is 220V.  

Hi Etop-Here in the U.S, these loads would be on separate circuits, so you would need to have the key switch control a relay or contactor on each circuit, so the switch itself would not need a very high current carrying capacity.I'm thinking there are more important considerations than the amount of power the key switch can handle. The key card readers are usually part of a bigger "property management" system, that is updated according to whether or not a room is rented, whether or not the room is clean, and whether or not the room is actually occupied, by interfacing with an occupancy sensor.Also, in many cases the key card reader itself will need to be wireless because it will be on the door as part of the door lock. -Rick

Rick- usually (from my experience) the intelligence in the card will let you enter the room via a reader in the door, but once inside you push the card into a switch such as the above (which is purely mechanical and does not actually read the card) to activate the lights etc.I agree that contactors are a good idea.  If your card switch goes faulty and there's 16A going through it you don't want it to melt or shower your guests with sparks.  Most rooms I've been in with this facility do have contactors; you hear a nice thump as you put the card in the switch.  And you can then switch 3 circuits on 3 phases if you wish.And Hot Water is not a good idea to have on this circuit.  You get into your room late at night, tired and dirty, and want a shower, but you have to wait half an hour for the water to warm up...by that time you'd have gone to another hotel   In any case, it's more efficient to have a hot water system supplying a few rooms.  I guess you could use those instant hot water systems, but they generally chew a lot of current and would need that contactor.

Hi David-Thanks for the information.  I didn't realize that the key card reader was separate from the door lock. You mentioned the "instant" hot water heaters- if you had one of those you wouldn't have to switch it since it would not be running if no one was in the room.-Rick
