Affordable radio module for embedded system with serial AT commands and data connectivity

Hello everybody. I'm looking for a radio module, able to provide mobile connectivity to an embeeded system under development. I'm not interested in voice or text traffic, I just need data connectivity (ftp, tcp/ip and, if available, mqtt or similar IoT protocols). The module shall interface with a microcontroller through a serial port and AT commands. Does anybody know a good and affordable device?

HiIt sounds like you are looking for a module to connect to the internet rather than pass data over a private radio link.Cellular modules such as those by simcom (https://simcom.ee/modules/gsm-gprs/sim800/) are cheap, relatively straightforward to use and can be controlled by AT commands.
Do be careful though and check that the module you eventually choose is and will be supported by carriers in your area until your devices expected EOL.Using a cellular module obviously has costs though as each module will need its own SIM card. If you have multiple modules deployed costs can quickly add up.If your devices are just in remote locations and not moving around then you could consider utilising ISM to communicate back to a gateway. The gateway then connects to the internet via WiFi/Cellular/whatever. I highly recommend modules by RF Solutions (https://www.rfsolutions.co.uk/) as they are easily interfaced to microcontrollers and have great range (up to 16Km in ideal conditions). Personally I have achieved a range of miles over typical countryside. In that application the remote units communicated via "Gamma" modules back to a central unit. That unit then connected to a Broadband Router via an ESP module.Regards

Thanks Chip and Giovanni for your response. It looks like Simcom has a wide selection of radio modules, supporting several communication standards and protocols. I think I will look for a suitable evaluation board. Thanks again.
