The check light on the dashboard is always associated with a fault code and it is definitely stored. Either the mechanic is trying to sell you or he has the wrong equipment to read it. I think either the ignition is out or the lambda probe is reporting an error.

Advertise, I don't know what can go wrong with such a simple job. Although it's story(description) strongly suspect too.
