    Hello,
Purely theoretical question as in the subject.
We have the board itself connected only to the power supply, of course with front panel pins, power led - switch on etc.
Does the board + power supply alone work? More specifically, it's about an Intel board on socket 478 - proc. pentium 4 2.8 Ghz - and now I replaced the board with a new one - I connected the power supply and pins according to diagram as it should be, i.e. power led, switch on \ off, the entire front panel led - I did not connect the usb. Generally, when it comes to the front panel, is it enough to just connect the on\off switch without all the rest? Does the disc have the right to move then..
    What am I going to?
After connecting the board + power supply + processor - no reaction, only a tiny green LED on the board lights up, that's all.
    greetings

A non-CPU board will not show what is commonly recognized as booting.

A board without a processor, never. Requires CPU, RAM and Graphics to run. And when trying to run Bios gave any signs in the form of squeaking? What is this album exactly? Does it have a built-in speaker? did you connect the speaker too? Did he give any signals?

only CPU, graphics and power supply. Most likely the motherboard's fault. Check the bios reset jumper.

memory needed to run the computer but not to turn on the fans on the board :D and start the power supply :D

not true - the motherboard and the power supply are enough - the speaker is also good

some boards have a led diode - do not suggest how it is lit - it may not be operational anyway

and one more thing - check the power supply - the LED was on for me and it turned out that the power supply did not give any voltage to start up - later when I burned the board (asus a7v600-x) the led was also on (and the fan on the processor even turned)

I confirm. Without a processor, the bios will not even beep, and I do not recommend turning on a non-processor board for its sake. However, the board + power supply + speaker can already give signs of life. A switch is also not needed. Can be turned on with a screwdriver or a pencil :D

The vast majority of Intel motherboards will not respond to a ps_on short circuit without a CPU. After installing it, the board usually starts on its own the first time (according to the terminology of the forum "the fan spins") - in the situation described by a colleague, the green LED lights up. If the LED lights up after powering up, but there is no reaction to the power jumper, and the board and the power supply are definitely operational, then there is a possibility that the damaged processor has a short circuit - I recently had such a case (admittedly with Duron).

@sliderps connect the board itself + proc + power supply on a desk without a housing, etc., see if the jumper from deleting bios settings is not set to deleting.

Use a screwdriver or anything else that conducts electricity to short the pins to which you connect the POWER ON cables. If it spins the fans, then you can assume that everything is ok, then put in the graphics and memory and check if the computer starts normally.

If so, put everything into the housing and look carefully if the board does not touch the housing somewhere, causing a short circuit, because this may be your problem.

If it won't start on the desk (even the fans) and you are sure that the power supply and mobo are working, then the processor is replaced by deduction.

Also check if your motherboard supports this processor.

Topic summary

The discussion centers around the functionality of a motherboard without a processor, specifically an Intel board with a socket 478 designed for a Pentium 4 2.8 GHz CPU. Participants clarify that a motherboard requires a CPU, RAM, and graphics to boot properly. While a motherboard and power supply can show some signs of life (like an LED lighting up), they will not complete the boot process without a CPU. Several users suggest troubleshooting steps, including checking the power supply, ensuring the BIOS reset jumper is correctly set, and testing the system outside of the case to avoid short circuits. If the board shows no response even with a known working power supply and motherboard, the processor may be faulty.
