    System: Windows 7
My friend in the Lenovo laptop (I will not give you the model at the moment) does not work with the mouse - both the touchpad and the USB mouse - runs on the screen but clicking has no effect. The keyboard works fine and "anything" can be done with it.
Sometimes it works for a few seconds and then stops.
    What could be causing this?
    Protection: MS Security Essentials

In about 1.5-2 hours I will have the opportunity to sit in front of the computer and figure it out, but I have no idea what could be the reason. I will definitely reinstall the drivers and see if the Live CD version works normally under the system, but any circumstantial evidence will be useful ;)

Also check Control Panel> Hardware and Sound> Mouse and look at the settings there.

Due to the lack of time, the case was put off and I am going back to it - I got a computer for the weekend to bury in it. Everything looks fine in the control panel.

    Added after 1 [minutes]:

Update: the problem is that clicking on the start bar and in the start menu works normally, similarly on the desktop area - the problem appears when clicking on programs launched on the NAD desktop (Firefox, Outlook, Word etc.) - the system is not responding or reacts as if clicked on the desktop (desktop icons are marked / underlined instead of e.g. firefox links) so the problem looks more like a system problem than drivers.
Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool detected nothing. The only thing that helps for a while is starting the Task Manager (then automatically the problem disappears for a while).

Laptop is Lenovo Thinkpad Edge model: 0301-GBG running Windows 7 Home Premium x64 with Microsoft Security Essentials antivirus.

Give a screen of all running processes.

First of all, scanning for malware. If both the external mouse and the touchpad do not work, the problem appears to be software. The question is whether you turned off the touchpad with a keyboard shortcut after connecting an external mouse? If not, turn off first and see if the problem persists.

In the attachment the log from the process explorer.

What is the best to scan? Because trends in this direction are changing and I don't know what has the greatest detectability ;)
The keyboard shortcut has never been turned off, as far as I know (the more so because my friend doesn't know the computer well, and I don't even see a button or a combination of buttons to do it)

Besides, I have such a "problem" that since I started this computer at home, the problem with the mouse did not occur yet, and the only thing I did with it (apart from making a process explorer logo) was to install system updates ...

Both MBAM and Spybot S&D have only detected threats like Adware and Tracking Cookie, SuperAntiSpyware is still scanned (and it looks like it would take ages) :P )

I used to have a similar problem on a desktop computer, it was about 5 months ago, then I was looking for the best antivirus and found Bit Defender before installing this program, he scanned the entire computer several times and found a lot of malicious applications, deleted them and the problems that plagued me disappeared. :) Bit Defender is a paid antivirus, but when I installed it, it was possible to install the 30-day version after installation, and I didn't like the program and decided to go back to the previous one. After 5 months, the computer is still working properly :) possibly a Combo fix scan, but that doesn't always help.

I scanned Bit Defender online (I didn't want to play with uninstalling and installing another program) - it didn't detect anything, Combofix removed some cookie and adware remnants.
Probably on Monday it will turn out if there are any effects, because since I got the computer on Friday (even before I did anything) the problem did not occur - if not, I will continue to drill down on the topic.

The reason was, however on the hardware side .
The moment I connected the laptop to the owner, it turned out that the problem returned. At first I was pissed off and wrung my hands, but after a while I thought what could be the reason - what has changed since my computer was at my house? Connected to another wireless network (unlikely), stands at a different angle on the stand instead of the desk (also a small chance), connected the mouse ...

The problem was the Modecom MC-610 mouse which apparently after one of the system updates found that it is incompatible with the drivers and prevented the trackpad from working properly. After replacing the mice with another computer (Win XP), the problem disappeared.
I am most interested in how the mouse influenced the bad performance of the trackpad?

Topic summary

A Lenovo laptop running Windows 7 is experiencing issues where mouse movement is functional, but clicking does not respond. Both the touchpad and USB mouse are affected, while the keyboard operates normally. Initial troubleshooting included checking mouse settings in the Control Panel and scanning for malware, which revealed no significant threats. The problem appears to be software-related, as clicking works in some areas (like the Start menu) but not in applications. After further investigation, it was discovered that a Modecom MC-610 mouse was causing compatibility issues with the drivers, leading to the malfunction of the trackpad. Replacing the mouse resolved the issue.
