Good day. Yesterday I disconnected the laptop from the power supply to transfer it and connect via USB to the printer. After this action, the mouse sections ceased.

    - I tested several wireless and wired mice, including bluetooth - none of them works.
    - the device manager shows mice as "other devices" (screen below), after clicking the details it shows the message: "drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)", this applies to all types of connected mice
    - Unfortunately, I could not find any mouse drivers for my Lenovo and Windows 10 models
    - USB ports are working properly, all other devices are recognized and working, except that the fact that the bluetooth mouse is not working also suggests that the problem is not USB
    - the touchpad works correctly

    Screen from device manager:
Lenovo T430 - Mouse not working after USB printer connection, Windows 10, Code 28 - All types

    Please help.

    Thanks for showing interest.

The equipment identifiers are as follows:
    USB \ VID_046D & PID_C534 & MI_00 - wireless mouse
    USB \ VID_093A & PID_2510 - wired mouse

I downloaded and uploaded drivers to a wired mouse https://driverscollection.com/?file_cid=463082396379b2f3d6c63f5b439 . Unfortunately, this did not fix the situation.

Could this be a driver problem? I have a freshly bought bluetooth mouse - it works on every tested computer, except mine. Similarly with every other old / new mouse. Works everywhere but not with me. And everything happened suddenly when after connecting the printer (which I did dozens of times before) or after disconnecting the laptop from the power supply (which I did hundreds of times).

EDIT: Maybe I will add that the bluetooth mouse detects the computer correctly, there are no error messages in the device manager, the mouse appears as a device working properly. Except ... it doesn't work :(

And when you turn off the touchpad?
There is no USB mouse option in the BIOS?

Disabling the touchpad does not help.

In Bios I didn't find anything about mice, only the options in the Keyboard / Mouse tab concern the FN key:

    Maybe the registry's fault.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Class \ {4D36E96F-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    "UpperFilters" and click it PPM.
In the "Value data" field, enter "mouclass", and remove the rest of the settings.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Class \ {4D36E96B-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Here "UpperFilters". Enter "kbdclass" in the "Value data" field, delete the rest of the settings.

    System restart and test.

In the register it looks like this:
Lenovo T430 - Mouse not working after USB printer connection, Windows 10, Code 28 - All types
So I think it's ok here? The mouse unfortunately still doesn't work :(

The mice must have drivers installed to work. Is the device manager still not installing them?
Is the bluetooth mouse installing correctly?

If I understand everything correctly, the bluetooth mouse according to the system is installed correctly:
Lenovo T430 - Mouse not working after USB printer connection, Windows 10, Code 28 - All types Lenovo T430 - Mouse not working after USB printer connection, Windows 10, Code 28 - All types
Well, but it doesn't work ...

However, when I connect a regular mouse under USB, it appears in the device manager in the "Other devices" position:
Lenovo T430 - Mouse not working after USB printer connection, Windows 10, Code 28 - All types
    Mouse IDs are:
    USB \ VID_046D & PID_C52F & MI_00
    USB \ VID_046D & PID_C52F & MI_01

Unfortunately, I could not find drivers for this equipment under Windows 10.

These are HID devices whose drivers should be integrated into the system.

Rather, it is the identifier of the Nit receiver Logitech wireless mouse - it works with SetPoint software - you can download it from the Logitech website.

Check if the system installs the drivers via Windows Update and / or update the operating system.

Also show the SMART hard disk drive to see if it's the fault of data loss.

    Do you have KB4074588 installed?

I supported and installed SetPoint. Should I do anything else in this program? The installation itself did not fix the situation.

There are no updates available. When I try to update the driver through the Windows device manager it does not find drivers:
Lenovo T430 - Mouse not working after USB printer connection, Windows 10, Code 28 - All types

    The disk looks ok:

    Yes

Try to uninstall and if it helps, postpone automatic updates. There is a lot, very much information on this subject on the internet.

Problem solved. The culprit was actually the KB4074588 add-in. The update removes some of the drivers, and then does not load them again for some reason. The same problem occurred on my girlfriend's laptop today. Uninstalling the update solves the problem (checked on the girl's computer). You can also keep the update and upload the missing drivers to the "Drivers" and "DriverStore" folders in System32 (checked with me). More details here: https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/7ywmy2/fixband_aid_for_kb4074588_windows_10/ " target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener ugc" class="postlink inline" title="" > https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/7ywmy2/fixband_aid_for_kb4074588_windows_10/ .

The only thing that still puzzles me is dates. The update was installed to me on February 14, and a problem with the mouse appeared a few days later. Similarly on the girl: February 16 update, and mouse collapse today. Maybe something is loading with a delay?

In any case, the topic resolved. Thank you for your help.

FAQ

TL;DR: After a USB-printer plug-in, 2 laptops lost mouse input due to KB4074588 removing HID drivers; "Uninstalling the update solves the problem." Fix by uninstalling KB4074588 or restoring drivers to System32\Drivers and DriverStore. [Elektroda, luk483, post #17056307]

Why it matters: This helps Windows 10 ThinkPad users fix Code 28 mice that stopped working after printer or update changes.

Quick Facts

Why did my Lenovo T430 mouse stop working after I connected a USB printer?

Windows update KB4074588 removed your in-box HID mouse drivers. After a USB printer plug-in, the system could no longer load them. Two laptops showed the same failure. Three mouse types failed: wired, wireless, and Bluetooth. The touchpad still worked, which pointed to drivers, not ports. Uninstall KB4074588 or restore the missing HID drivers to System32\Drivers and DriverStore. [Elektroda, luk483, post #17056307]

What does Device Manager Code 28 mean for a mouse?

Code 28 indicates the drivers for the device are not installed. In this scenario, USB mice appear under “Other devices” with that error. That points to missing HID-class drivers rather than a bad mouse. The touchpad continues to function, which supports a driver issue. Reinstall in-box HID drivers or roll back the problematic update. [Elektroda, luk483, post #17051068]

How do I uninstall KB4074588 to restore my mouse?

  1. Open Settings > Update & Security > View update history > Uninstall updates.
  2. Select “Update for Microsoft Windows (KB4074588)”, uninstall, then reboot.
  3. Pause or postpone automatic updates to prevent a reinstallation. Then test the mouse. [Elektroda, adamjk, post #17055883]

Can I keep KB4074588 and still get my mouse working?

Yes. Restore the missing HID drivers into C:\Windows\System32\Drivers and C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore. The reporter kept the update and regained mouse function by copying the absent files. This workaround avoids uninstalling the cumulative update but requires known-good driver copies. Reboot after restoring files and re-test the mouse. [Elektroda, luk483, post #17056307]

Will Logitech SetPoint fix Logitech Unifying receiver mice here?

No, not if HID-class drivers are missing. The Unifying receiver enumerated, and SetPoint was installed, but input still failed. “The installation itself did not fix the situation.” Restore HID drivers or remove KB4074588 first, then SetPoint can add features if needed. [Elektroda, luk483, post #17055293]

Does Safe Mode help if mice stop working with Code 28?

Safe Mode did not restore mouse input in this case. That suggests the root cause is not a third‑party startup conflict. It aligns with missing in-box HID drivers from a Windows update. Use the update removal or driver-restore fixes instead. [Elektroda, luk483, post #17054660]

Is this a hardware problem with the USB ports or mice?

Unlikely. Other USB devices were recognized and worked. Multiple mice, including Bluetooth and wired models, all failed only on the affected PC. The confirmed fix was software: remove KB4074588 or restore HID drivers. That outcome rules out hardware faults. [Elektroda, luk483, post #17056307]

Do Bluetooth mice fail too, even when they pair?

Yes. The Bluetooth mouse paired and showed “device working properly,” yet the pointer did not move. That behavior matches a missing HID input path rather than a Bluetooth pairing failure. Address HID drivers or roll back KB4074588 to restore function. [Elektroda, luk483, post #17051184]

Are there BIOS settings on a ThinkPad T430 that could disable external mice?

No relevant toggle appears in the T430 BIOS. The Keyboard/Mouse section only exposes FN-key choices. There is no USB mouse enable/disable option to correct this issue. Focus on Windows drivers and updates instead. [Elektroda, luk483, post #17051461]

What about checking UpperFilters registry entries for mouclass and kbdclass?

You can verify the class filters. Set UpperFilters to “mouclass” for the mouse class and “kbdclass” for the keyboard class. Remove any other entries, then reboot. This aligns the filter stack with the default Windows input drivers. If input still fails, proceed to the KB4074588 fixes. [Elektroda, DriverMSG, post #17052165]

I set UpperFilters correctly, but the mouse still doesn’t work. What next?

If UpperFilters already show mouclass/kbdclass, the registry is not the problem. In the reported case, it was set correctly and input still failed. Move on to removing KB4074588 or restoring HID drivers to resolve the missing driver condition. [Elektroda, luk483, post #17052224]

Windows can’t find a driver for my USB mouse. Is that normal here?

It can happen when the in-box HID drivers were removed. Device Manager attempted to search for drivers and found none. Windows Update also reported no updates. Restore HID drivers manually or remove KB4074588 to let the system use the built-in stack again. [Elektroda, luk483, post #17055293]

What is USB\VID_046D&PID_C52F showing under “Other devices”?

That hardware ID maps to a Logitech Unifying receiver. It normally works with Windows’ HID stack and optional Logitech SetPoint. If the HID stack is missing, SetPoint alone won’t restore input. Fix the HID drivers first, then reconnect the receiver. [Elektroda, DriverMSG, post #17054765]

Why did the mouse failure appear days after installing KB4074588?

The reporter saw KB4074588 install on Feb 14 and 16, with failures days later. That suggests a delayed trigger, such as device re-enumeration after reconnecting peripherals. The fix remained the same: remove the update or restore HID drivers. [Elektroda, luk483, post #17056307]
