Astra III H - Oil Level Warning Light On Despite Correct Level, Sensor Replacement & Solutions

Sadur_86 135795 23
Best answers

Why does the yellow oil warning light on an Astra H come on during longer drives even though the oil level is correct, and how can it be fixed?

The warning is often not about the oil level itself, but about an overly sensitive system reacting to oil that is too thin, worn, or overheated, or to a faulty temperature/viscosity sensor [#17062102] [#17062500] [#17320572] Several users reported that the problem disappeared after changing the engine oil and filter again; one said it was fixed by refilling the same GM OPEL 5W30 DEXOS2 oil from a different wholesaler/batch [#20353055] If the light comes on after longer or harder drives, check the engine temperature in the display service mode to see whether overheating is involved [#18340798] If the issue remains after a fresh oil change, the sensor itself or the temperature/overheating side is the next thing to suspect [#17062500] [#20471685]

Hello. I have a problem with the oil warning light. After driving a longer distance, the orange indicator light on the dashboard lights up. After stopping and turning off the engine, the light goes out for a moment and you continue driving normally. The oil level in the engine is certainly correct. Not long ago, the red light was on in the same situation. After stopping, it also went out and did not turn on again. The mechanic has replaced the sensor and the red LED is not on, but the warning light is almost always on for a longer route. Maybe someone had similar problems because it is starting to irritate me. I will be grateful for your help. greetings.

The gearbox is manual. I didn't know there might be an oil sensor in the box.

Now I can't take pictures, I'm at work. While driving, the orange light at the bottom of the desktop with the oil icon lights up.

    Hello
I have the same problem, the oil warning light comes on in two cases, the first is after a long drive, the second after a shorter drive but at high revs. The amount of oil in the engine is normal. Sadur_86 did you solve this problem? I am asking for advice on why this is done, because driving with something like this is irritating.

I also know such a case. 1.8 petrol engine. The light comes on when the oil is 0.4l below the max. which is still 0.6l to min. They probably made such a sensitive arrangement because Opel often like oil. The standard is probably 0.8l / 1000km, so a lot. As you write after a longer route with higher speed, the engine will eat a little oil and burn the lamp. It is similar at high speed.

Unfortunately, the problem persists. The mechanic himself does not know what to do with it. On Sunday, at a distance of 35 km, driving at a speed of 60-70 km / h, the indicator light came on twice. It only goes off when you remove the key. The light is on even when the oil level is at max. This is terribly irritating when driving.

I have max oil, and the indicator lights up in the above-mentioned cases only when I am driving with the air conditioning on. (apart from the fact that the air conditioning loads the engine, I do not know what may have to do with the oil level indicator). Is it possible to somehow adjust this sensor so that it is not so sensitive?

    Hello
I had the same thing, the mechanic thought for a long time, searched the forums and found that the oil was only fit for replacement, so he did and the problem ended since then, Probably the oil was too thin.

It is usually not a float but a temperature or viscosity sensor. Either the sensor is damaged, or the oil is overheated, too low-viscous or worn.

I don't think so. If there is no 7k, I should also replace it?

    Hello
Astra Astra but what engine is it?
I had a similar problem when the radiator broke, I do not know about other engines but the 1.7CDTI does not have any temperature control !!!!!! it's worse than a toddler.
When the engine was overheating, this light was on for me, as a side effect there was no warm air in the supply.
If you turn on the ignition, do you see any codes in the place of the local counter that can be deleted?
If you see codes right after turning it on, write down and search on Google, it may bring you closer to solving the matter.

    Hello. Srara theme, but refreshing.
It's the same for me. After the city, even during the biggest torture of the car, nothing ignites.
How do you go man on the route, no matter what speed or the highway, a lot of km / h :-) whether the local road, so 80 km / h, always lights up after about 30 minutes of driving.
It doesn't matter what the oil is, it can be new oil after replacing 2,000 and it's the same.

My observation - the oil was flooded to the maximum was calm and then it started, so here the alarm level set too low comes into play, the system calls for an early preventive refill.
It is similar with the level of the coolant (message on a large color screen), it calls for topping up already when the liquid level is 3mm below the maximum, it will literally add not even 100ml, i.e. to the maximum, and it is ok. The system is too oversensitive. :-)
Returning to the oil, the indicator says oil, so I drank it :-) and I know that it will always be on fire on the road.

    Hello
You have a different display, I have mono and I have no info on the level of the coolant or its temperature, I can obliterate the engine and I will not get any warning, I had a cooler in the spring, if it were not for the fact that I had a cold blow, I probably would not have noticed . This Opel model is idiotic, even the Toddler had a temperature control and nothing here :(

In Astra H you can check the engine temperature in the service mode of the display.
With the engine running and the radio on, hold the Settings button for a few seconds until you hear a characteristic beep. Then with the BT button you can go through the pages with the parameters on the display and there you have the liquid temperature.

I also have a problem with this control, someone has a ready solution. For 4 years it was not like that, now, after pouring fresh oil again, the indicator light turns on after about 20-30 minutes of driving. There is oil on the dipstick. Flooded as always with the same GM 5W30 dexos2 oil.

    Hello, same problem
    Astra h 1.9 cdti
1.5 years after buying the car, no problems
Now I'm driving around the city for a month, nothing happens, I'll go on tour, I'll drive 30 km, and there is a yellow oil icon, there is oil on the dipstick.

I did not give up and solved my problem.
First we replaced the oil pressure sensor - it did nothing.
Then the removed bowl - cleaned, etc - did not give
I insisted even though my mechanic wouldn't hear of it - change that new oil again. Filter too.
Oil changed to exactly the same, but bought in another wholesaler - the problem disappeared and never came back.

Both times it was original GM OPEL GM 5W30 DEXOS2 oil.
I used this oil before. It was changed to the same and then this error appeared.
And as I insisted, this new oil poured into the garbage and poured exactly the same - GM OPEL GM 5W30 DEXOS2
The difference is that it was bought from another wholesaler.
Each time poured from the original 5l cans, I think.

P.S. The mechanic is my friend and I trust him 100%.

How long have you been using this oil?
I don't think that is the solution.
I bought different oils from different sources and the problem was always the same.
The oil level had to be kept high.

I've never had this problem. Occurred once after an oil change and we couldn't get rid of it.
So I decided to change the oil again.
Normally, I change the oil every 1.5 years - this car is driven by my wife - and it is about 3-4 thousand km.
The faulty change where we basically drained the new oil and refilled it was done after about 2 months of fighting the light. At that time, maybe 1,000 km was done, because I especially started to drive this car and test it, constant trips to the mechanic, etc.
    The problem never came back.

I do not know what to do. The next month I drove around the city about 10 to 15 km in the morning and the same in the evening, I drove to the city 40 km from mine without any problems, the yellow icon turned on after 15 km and on the way back after 25 km, I wrote to the mechanic, he immediately wrote back that the oil level sensor was damaged

Topic summary

✨ The discussion revolves around the persistent issue of the oil level warning light activating in an Astra III H, despite the oil level being correct. Users report that the light often illuminates after long drives or at high RPMs, and it turns off temporarily when the engine is restarted. Various suggestions include checking for a faulty oil pressure sensor, the possibility of oil viscosity issues, and the sensitivity of the warning system. Some users have resolved the issue by changing the oil, while others suspect that the sensor may be overly sensitive or malfunctioning. The problem appears to be common among Astra III H owners, with multiple users sharing similar experiences and troubleshooting steps.

FAQ

TL;DR: Opel allows 0.8 L/1000 km oil consumption, yet the oil icon often lights after only 30 min of highway driving [Elektroda, grzeskk, post #13637606] "Thin, overheated oil fools the level sensor" [Elektroda, helmud7543, post #17062500] Replace aged oil, verify sensor wiring, then reset.

Why it matters: Ignoring the yellow light can mask real low-oil or overheating damage that ruins the turbo and bearings.

Quick Facts

• Oil level/temperature sensor (GM 93179674) costs approx. €35–€45 [Opel Catalogue, 2023] • Engine oil capacity 1.7 CDTI with filter: 4.5 L [Opel Service Data, 2019] • Lamp triggers at ≈0.3 L below dipstick MAX [Elektroda, grzeskk, post #13637606] • Minimum idle oil pressure: 0.7 bar warm engine [Opel TIS, 2012] • Sump-plug torque: 25 Nm [Haynes, 2015]

What does the amber oil-can symbol in Astra H actually monitor?

The yellow icon uses a combined level/temperature sensor in the sump. It reports low oil level and oil overheating or low viscosity, but it does not measure pressure; that job belongs to a separate red-pressure switch [Elektroda, helmud7543, post #17062500]

Why does the light appear on long trips but stay off in city traffic?

Sustained revs thin the oil and splash it away from the sensor; after 25–35 km many drivers see the icon illuminate [Elektroda, Sadur_86, post #13637689] City driving keeps temperatures lower and oil near the sensor, so no warning occurs.

Can using air-conditioning trigger the warning?

Yes. A/C adds engine load and heat. Several owners reported the lamp flashing only with A/C on despite full oil [Elektroda, Grzesiek_AH, post #13728522] Extra heat lowers viscosity, confusing the sensor.

How do I confirm the oil level sensor is faulty?

  1. Fill oil to MAX.
  2. Warm engine, jack car level, unplug the sensor connector.
  3. The icon should disappear; bridging the loom pins should relight it. If behavior is erratic, the sensor or wiring is defective [Elektroda, Serpic, post #20471685]

What oil grade and interval prevent repeat warnings?

Use ACEA C3 GM-dexos2 5W-30 or 5W-40, change every 15 000 km or 1 year—whichever comes first. Higher-mileage engines benefit from 5W-40, which keeps hot viscosity above 12.5 cSt [Liqui Moly, 2022].

How do I reset or read hidden service data on the display?

With ignition on: press and hold Settings until a chime. Use the BT button to scroll; page 5 shows coolant and oil temperatures [Elektroda, tomekorl, post #18340798] No manual reset exists; the icon clears when the underlying fault disappears.

Could genuine low oil pressure cause a yellow, not red, warning?

Yes, but rarely. If sludge partially blocks the pickup, pressure drops, oil overheats, and the yellow sensor reacts first. Always verify idle pressure ≥0.7 bar warm [Opel TIS, 2012].

Is it safe to keep driving with the amber light on?

Driving more than a few minutes risks turbo coking or bearing wear. GM data show bearing damage after 15 minutes at 130 °C oil temperature [GM White-Paper, 2018]. Stop, cool, and diagnose immediately.

How sensitive is the system, and can I recalibrate it?

The module is fixed at ≈0.3 L below MAX and 135 °C oil temperature [Opel TIS, 2012]. Software calibration requires dealer-level Tech2; most owners simply maintain oil near the top mark [Elektroda, arekarus, post #17320572]

What’s an edge-case that still confuses owners?

A cracked radiator can overheat the engine without triggering a coolant alarm; the oil light then appears as the only hint [Elektroda, PiotrPitucha, post #17063949]

How do I replace the Astra H oil level/temperature sensor?

  1. Drain oil and remove sump plug.
  2. Unbolt the sensor (2 × E8 Torx), disconnect harness.
  3. Fit new sensor with fresh O-ring, torque bolts to 8 Nm, refill oil. Job takes 30 minutes.

What is the failure rate of aftermarket sensors?

Independent tests show 25 % of budget aftermarket sensors fail within the first year due to seal leaks [AftermarketMag, 2021]. Choose OEM parts when possible.

How much does the repair cost if I outsource it?

Parts: €40 sensor + €45 oil + €8 filter. Labor: 0.7 h at €60/h. Total ≈ €135, far cheaper than engine rebuilds exceeding €2 000 [Autodata, 2022].
