While trying to connect to the Internet, users may get this error 628: The connection was terminated by the remote computer before it could be completed. Often this problem is caused by insufficient signal strength and makes it impossible to connect to your modem.
How to solve this problem? First of all, make sure that your network cable is properly attached, not damaged and it works (this can be done by plugging in a phone and checking whether there is a dial tone, it is also recommended to check if you are dialing the right phone number), so that you may be certain that the source of trouble is not the cable or modem itself. In a case when you use an external modem, make sure it is correctly seated in an expansion slot. In other words, first of all you have to verify if the connection problem is not caused by a mundane reason. Once you know the machine works properly, it is time to check the signal.
Assuming you have a driver installed, try to uninstall and reinstall it again or update it by expanding Network adapters and right clicking on the Network Card Drive (there you will find Update Driver Software and a wizard will guide you through the process). When none of this does not seem to solve the issue, it is time to open the Device Manager (Start button -> Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> Device Manager). The list of categories in the Device Manager should contain Modems. If there is not such a record, it means that your modem is not recognized by Windows. To solve this, you simply have to install a driver which is compatible with your modem. You can make it using Windows Update, which should automatically detect your modem. If it does not happen, you have to do it yourself. Find the website of your modem’s manufacturer and install the latest driver on your computer.
If you didn’t succeed to solve the problem so far, the network adapter may need to be enabled. To do this, click Start -> type ncpa.cpl in Search programs and files box and confirm (OK). Click icon of Local Area Connection using the right button of your mouse, then check whether the adapter is enabled. When it is not, select Enable. Error 628 may also refer to another network problem. It may be useful to check the IP address in your Internet settings in Properties of active network.
Error 628 may also be caused by Antivirus which does not recognize autorun.inf of broadband. In this case, adding autorun.inf to the exclusions of Antivirus running on your machine should work. Similar to this, the problem can be also your Firewall settings. You may then try to disable the Firewall protection and check whether this solves the error.
