    Hello,
I have been using WiFi on the vectra router for a long time and for some time something has been bothering me. Well, when I was at a friend's, who also uses a vectra router, I wanted to connect to WiFi - he gave me the password and it turned out that the first six characters are the same as mine. The point is that I am not sure if Vectra gives out almost the same passwords when configuring routers, because if this is true, then wifi networks will be very vulnerable to attacks. In addition, I do not know if it is possible to change the password, because when you called the hotline you said that they could not do something like that.
Question for vnet users - what are the first 6 characters of your passwords? If my friend's password was not a coincidence, this matter needs to be resolved somehow.
    greetings

Because they are vulnerable. The first six characters are the manufacturer of the chipset / network module, the next six are the sequential number. The password to the network is MAC Adress and the preschooler is able to get into WiFi vectra.

The worst part of all this is that the Vectra user cannot change the password himself - he has no access to the login and password to log into the Vectra router, nor to see how many "silent partners" he has to the Internet.

To use the Vectra internet, it is enough for any program that displays to us, in addition to the network name, also the MAC address of the access point.

Nothing prevents you from calling BOK and requesting a password change - they have to do it.

If the consultant changes your password, the password remains. One-day codes for the ARRIS router are just a curiosity, because nothing can be saved there permanently. Even if you make a backup of your previously saved settings and after restarting you want to load it, the router automatically restarts and loads the top configuration.

@mefresek I have a question, do you have a password that is valid at the moment?

Vectra is not so (or I am confused with another operator) that the password for your WiFi needs to be modified through some customer panel on the service provider's website and not directly in the modem?

It doesn't bother me. I need to access the general panel of the router at the address 192.168. . . But for this you need a password, which unfortunately I did not receive from the installer.

Then put your router behind the vectra router, and set the vectra equipment to bridge mode or set your router to DMZ. And the topic of SOLVED

I know that it is possible to add an additional router, but it does not work for me. : / They probably do not give this router for free, in which you can add a lot of additional security elements (if you have access) ps. Remotely, it is not possible to enter what I care about (unfortunately).

What is it, or who is the problem here to use such a variant?
Especially since then you modify your wifi network as it suits you and with a password given by you, where the possibility of breaking into such wifi is much smaller than leaving it as it is and relying on the operator.

The problem with the equipment belonging to the operator has always been there. Be it adsl, dsl or ISP of cable TV. Instead of crying that they can't be blocked etc etc, you should ask for a regular modem and buy a router that will make you happy. The discussions about poor coverage, no access, blocked XXX port, insufficient speed and similar nonsense will end!

    This can not be true...

Due to the fact that more than two years have passed since I wrote this post, and the problem has already been resolved. I will present the matter to posterity in the form of a curiosity. To be able to connect to the Vectra access point, you had to find the Vectra network, eg "vnet-ABCDE2", and in any program displaying the name of the point (SSID), channel, Mac Address of the point, etc., read the Mac address of the point. When entering the key, which is the mac address of the access point, e.g. 00-11-22-AB-CD-E0, you only had to change the last character that appeared in the network name. in our case, zero for two and kick the soul ...

It's a fact, a lot has changed since then. Currently, a random password of perhaps 16 characters is generated. Of course, it is possible to change this password in the wifi panel via the subscriber account.

Topic summary

The discussion revolves around concerns regarding the similarity of WiFi passwords generated by Vectra routers, particularly the first six characters, which appear to be consistent across different users. This raises security concerns about potential vulnerabilities in the network. Users report that the default password is derived from the MAC address of the router, making it easy for unauthorized access. While some users suggest that Vectra's customer service can change the password, others indicate that the password resets to default after a reboot. There are mentions of the ARRIS router and its temporary passwords, as well as suggestions to use additional routers for enhanced security. Recent updates indicate that Vectra now generates longer, random passwords, and users can change them through a subscriber account.
