I bet it's cheaper. You can make a 1Gbit interface for pennies. On good kalnach will go and 10gbit. The cable is cheap as dirt, unlike a good coax. Thinner cable, easier to install. Active devices are cheaper, smaller.

It's not exactly like that. In the 10Base5 standard, on the so-called thick 50? coax, a single segment was up to 500m long.
