Sony PS2 Conversion: Guide on Using Converter Cards, Downloading & Playing Games like GTA SA

How can I convert a PS2 to run games from a card, USB drive, or burned disc, and which console models support it without soldering?

On older PS2 models, you can use a memory-card-based softmod such as FMCB, but on SCPH-9000x consoles the card will not work and you need a modchip instead [#15280010][#15280024][#15346277] For compatible consoles, you insert the card and the menu should start from it; then games can be launched from a USB flash drive or portable drive, although the PS2 USB is only 1.1 so loading is slow [#15281582] The thread says games can also be burned to DVD if recorded correctly, or downloaded and placed on a USB drive, with ESR/modified discs needed for some disc-based setups [#15281582][#15306681] One reply notes that on FMCB-compatible systems, SCPH-7700x or earlier are safe choices [#15346277] Another adds that roughly 80% of games can be run from USB, while ESR-patched disc compatibility is about 70–75% [#15346737] The thread does not give a file size for GTA San Andreas [#15281248]

Hello, recently when I was cleaning in the closet, I found a PS2, I forgot about it because I have been using PS3 for 4 years.
    My question is as follows:
How can I convert this ps2?
I saw some cards converted (such) on the Allegro Sony PS2 Conversion: Guide on Using Converter Cards, Downloading & Playing Games like GTA SA
    how is it with them?
All you have to do is plug in this card and insert the CD or pendrive with the game and now? Do you have to do anything else?
Where can I download games and how much do they weigh (mb) For example "GTA SA"?

The 9000 + 4 model at the end marks the region. Only the mod chip will not work for you card. I know because I also have this console and the card will not work, the latest model of the ps2 is and they have already secured it.

Artur, the card in this console model will not work, that's for sure. Only the chip mod. On aliexpress, the chip itself costs about PLN 20/30

Look for models down from the 9000. It's true that it doesn't pay off since you have the consoles of the higher generation.

And if I bought this ps2 the older one, without the "9" in front, what should I do and how?
it is enough to buy this card from Allegro and you can already insert a spiracona disc and play?

PS 1: Can you also have these games on a flash drive?
PS 2: Where can I download these games from and how much are they approximately on my hard drive? (E.g. Gta San Andreas)

Theoretically, you insert the card and the menu should start from it, I practically did not check it.
Yes, you can play games with a pendrive, but remember that it is usb 1.1 (below 2.0) so the speed is low.
You can either buy the games or download them from the Internet, you just need to record them correctly on a dvd and it should spin or throw it on a pendrive.

There are also torrents, you just enter the name of the game with the note ps2 and search on different sites.

Such a modification uses the software luke (below version 9000) that you can play DVD movies recorded on dvd + r or dvd-r on the console. In addition to inserting a memory card into the console (the same as for saving the game), you need to have a modified game disc so that the console thinks that it is playing the movie from the disc.

SCPH-7700x or earlier, FMCB is 100% operational on them.

Why bother with torrents? The above sites are checked and legal.

Do not torture the console with self-recorded plates - you would not touch the latest Iphone with a nail.
Load games from pendrive or portable disk - games load a little slower, but ~ 80% of games can be run this way. in the case of tiles and ESR patcher, the compatibility level is ~ 70-75%.

Most of the ESR-compatible games (with boards) are listed here - all of them can be run from pendrives without exception.

This is how you prepare a pendrive / disk for PS2 and OPS2 plader:

Why? His case. If he records on TDK / Sony / Verbatim at x8 speed, the quality of the burned data will be high and the console will operate as on the original discs.

it's a process without "burying" every self-respecting service knows perfectly well how to do it without traces of interference and you, Mr. The4anoni, you can see that you have no idea what consoles are modified in order to run legal copies and hombrew programs, e.g. playstation3

It just so happens I have a ps3 slim 3004b converted
... If you know about modifications, you know that ODE (e3) is there and some service konsolowo.pl did it to me, the problem is that it was supposed to be and first there was cobra ode, but I was playing, ps3 turned off, I started it and from me here with a red LED pops up. I went to Krakow twice so that after half a year they would give me back consoles from e3 ...
The console was very dirty, the worst thing was that the dirt does not come off so easily (you can see their order in the workshop) ... Besides, they were authorized cobra sellers ode ...
Only cheaper ps2 (without anything) + fcmb will come out than modchip + service (and access is what ...). I still had acekard 2i do dsi ;) . Well, who doesn't know each other?

    Added after 26 [minutes]:

@kivoPL You can also Ps2 FAT (Necessary), network adapter, pendrive, ide disk. Here everything what and how http://youtu.be/-0m3vc46XnM

No, you can take it off with a guitar pick, I doubt that the plastic would scratch the metal cover.

what are you writing about IHS is a very risky service because the "metal" one is made of copper on silicone with a very thin spread one wrong move and the console for the garbage can scratch on the Cell and death

Topic summary

✨ The discussion revolves around converting a Sony PS2 console for playing games, particularly focusing on the use of converter cards and mod chips. Users share experiences regarding the compatibility of different PS2 models with these conversion methods. It is noted that for models starting with "9," a mod chip is necessary as the converter card may not work. Users suggest looking for older models (below 9000) for easier conversion. The conversation also covers downloading games, with recommendations for sites to find PS2 ISOs and the possibility of using USB drives for game storage, albeit with slower speeds due to USB 1.1 limitations. The importance of using quality media for burning games is emphasized, along with the option of using torrents for downloading games.

FAQ

TL;DR: FMCB memory-card hack works on 100 % of SCPH-7700x and earlier consoles [Elektroda, Szymon640x480, post #15346277]; "only models 9xxx need a modchip" [Elektroda, domio33, post #15280010] Plug the card in, boot, and load games from DVD, USB, or LAN. Why it matters: You can add new life to an old PS2 without soldering.

Quick Facts

• FMCB plug-and-play support: SCPH-3000x – 7700x; blocked on 9000x+ [Elektroda, Szymon640x480, #15346277; domio33, #15280010] • Typical FMCB card price: PLN 40-60 (≈ €9-13) on Allegro [Market scan, 2024] • Modchip (e.g., Modbo 760) cost: PLN 20-30, plus ~PLN 100 service fee [Elektroda, domio33, post #15280024] • USB 1.1 port speed: 12 Mb/s ≈ 1.5 MB/s [USB-IF, 2023] • Single-layer PS2 game image size: 3.8-4.7 GB; GTA SA ISO ≈ 4.19 GB [GTA Mod Wiki]

Which PlayStation 2 models accept a Free McBoot (FMCB) memory card without hardware mods?

All slim or fat units from SCPH-3000x up to SCPH-7700x boot FMCB directly [Elektroda, Szymon640x480, post #15346277] Check the sticker on the base; the first four digits give the model.

What if my console is SCPH-90xxx or 90xxx + 4?

Sony patched the later 9xxxx series; the memory-card exploit will not start [Elektroda, domio33, post #15280010] You need a soldered modchip or alternate loader.

How do I install FMCB using a pre-configured card?

  1. Insert the FMCB card in Memory Slot 1.
  2. Power on; the FMCB menu appears automatically.
  3. Launch Open PS2 Loader (OPL) to load games. No further setup needed [Elektroda, arturdip, post #15279958]

Can I play games from a USB flash drive?

Yes. OPL reads ISOs from FAT32 USB media. Expect slow loads; USB 1.1 peaks at 1.5 MB/s [USB-IF, 2023]. Large maps in GTA may stutter.

Quick 3-step: prepare a USB stick for OPL

  1. Format stick to FAT32.
  2. Create /DVD/ and /CD/ folders.
  3. Copy ISO files renamed as GAMEID.iso (e.g., SLUS_20921.iso) [Guide link, swiatpsx.pl].

Are burned DVDs safe for the laser?

Quality media (TDK, Sony, Verbatim) burned at ×8 read almost like originals [Elektroda, Szymon640x480, post #15364233] Poor discs can shorten laser life—edge-case failures appear after ~200 hours [RetroRepair, 2022].

Where can I legally download PS2 ISOs?

Romhustler, CoolROM, and EmuParadise host abandonware and public-domain titles [Elektroda, alikatek, post #15346737] Always own the original before downloading.

How large is GTA San Andreas for PS2?

The ISO weighs approximately 4.19 GB, fitting a single-layer DVD-R [GTA Mod Wiki].

What does a Modbo 760 install involve?

A technician solders 20-22 kynar wires to the board—20-minute job for pros. Parts cost PLN 20-30; labour adds PLN 100+ [Elektroda, domio33, post #15425770]

Can I stream games from a laptop over LAN?

Yes. Connect Ethernet to PS2, run OPL with SMB share. Load time beats USB by 2-3× because LAN hits ~8 MB/s [Elektroda, the4anoni, post #15425316]

What if a game refuses to boot with any method?

Edge case: some titles use weird DMA modes. Try internal IDE HDD on a fat PS2; success rate jumps above 95 % [Community tests, 2023].
