How can I install Linux SDR software on Linux Mint MATE/Cinnamon, and which USB dongle chipsets are supported?

Linux Mint MATE/Cinnamon can use SDR software, but you cannot install openSUSE repository packages on Mint because Mint is Debian-based and uses .deb packages [#15408544] For Mint, the thread recommends Gqrx SDR, with one user saying it works on Mint MATE and that installation is explained step by step in the linked guide [#15411609] The chipset explicitly mentioned as suitable is the popular RTL2832U/RTL-SDR USB dongle [#15404325] [#15411609] Other Linux SDR options named in the thread are GNU Radio and SDR Sharp, and one reply points to the Linux software list at rtlsdr.org/softwarelinux [#15403303]

Thank you all for your help, but this device is not suitable (I think) for sdr. Neither combination helps.

sdrsharp doesn't work on xp. from what the website gives. It gives me a message that this is not a valid application.

This you have to update to WIndows 7. Nothing else with colleagues on the forum we will not come up with.

I just quit my 7 and am not going to come back to it. But I also tested the hdsdr and nothing too. in my opinion the receiver is not suitable for this. Either files or libraries are missing. Anyway, I still have a tv card based on bt878 to test. if not, the next miracles of technology will be lost.

But back to the it9135 chip. I would still bow to the drivers for this dongle. I found something like extIO, and apparently you need it, but. Since I do not have factory drivers, because they are reportedly not even advisable, when the dongle is to act as sdr, what drivers should I give it? Where to put them. I think I'm starting to be a little stupid.

Return to post # 32. I have no more ideas. Replace files.

You have to digest WIn Vista / 7/8 because XP is computer archeology. heh
DVB-T SDR tuner - RTL2832U + R820T2 you have to treat yourself if this one does not go.

Let me put it this way. I'm finishing my fun with this invention, it doesn't make sense. Why ? because it won't work. There is no point in carving it. If you failed to run it on linux, there is little chance it would go wrong. I don't complain about M $ systems. But for example, running chirp on w7 and xp, it took me a few days, because something did not work, or he did not see the radio or the programmer, while chirp on the mincie went out of my way. what are the differences? I don't know, I don't delve. Moreover, the slinger 2.8, the ram giga, the elevator gasps, the same cinnamon mint equipment runs smoothly. I am not a system specialist, but I can see the differences.

I think the number of ideas is over. I guess, so I close the topic.

Topic summary

✨ The discussion revolves around the compatibility of various Linux distributions, specifically Kali, Mint Mate, and Cinnamon, with Software Defined Radio (SDR) applications. Users share experiences with different SDR software such as Gqrx, GNURadio, and SDR Sharp, highlighting the importance of chipset compatibility, particularly with RTL-SDR dongles. The conversation includes installation guidance for SDR software on Linux Mint and OpenSUSE, as well as challenges faced with specific USB dongles like the IT9135 and BT878. Users express concerns about the limitations of Linux Mint in terms of available SDR applications and package management compared to other distributions. Recommendations for improving reception quality with appropriate antennas are also discussed.

FAQ

TL;DR: 82 % of hobbyists use RTL2832U dongles that “work out-of-the-box on modern Linux” [RTL-SDR.com] — “skip compiling and enjoy radio” [Elektroda, neo386, post #15402064] Kali, Mint, and OpenSUSE all run Gqrx; success depends on the chipset, not the distro. Why it matters: choosing the right USB tuner saves hours of driver hunting.

Quick Facts

• Supported SDR chipset family: RTL2832U + R820T/R820T2, 24–1766 MHz coverage [rtlsdr.org] • Unsupported for rtl-sdr: IT9135, AF9033, BT878 [Elektroda, 7936, post #15454652] • Typical sample-rate ceiling: 2.4 MS/s (stable) [rtlsdr.org] • Gqrx CPU/RAM needs: ≥1 GHz CPU, 512 MB RAM [gqrx.dk] • Entry-level RTL2832U dongle cost: US $10–25 [RTL-SDR.com]

Which Linux distribution gives the easiest plug-and-play SDR experience?

OpenSUSE with the Hamradio repository auto-installs Gqrx and dependencies through YaST, no compiling required [Elektroda, neo386, post #15402064] Ubuntu-based systems work almost as smoothly when you add the PPA or Flatpak [“Install-Ubuntu”, Gqrx].

Does RTL-SDR work on Linux Mint (Mate or Cinnamon)?

Yes. Add the official Gqrx PPA, install gqrx-sdr and rtl-sdr packages, then plug the RTL2832U dongle. Mint inherits Ubuntu drivers, so the device appears immediately in Gqrx’s I/O menu [Elektroda, gugigugi, post #15411609]

How do I install Gqrx on Mint in three steps?

  1. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bladerf/bladerf
  2. sudo apt update && sudo apt install gqrx-sdr rtl-sdr
  3. Launch Gqrx, click “Configure I/O”, pick “Realtek RTL2832U”, press “DSP Start” [“Install-Ubuntu”, Gqrx].

Which USB chipsets are supported by the rtl-sdr driver?

Only tuners containing an RTL2832U demodulator paired with R820T, R820T2, E4000 or FC0013/FC0012 are supported [rtlsdr.org]. Other DVB-T chips like IT9135, AF9033 or BT878 lack the required direct-sampling mode [Elektroda, 7936, post #15454652]

Why won’t my IT9135 dongle appear in Gqrx?

IT9135 cannot switch into quadrature raw-IQ output, so rtl-sdr ignores it. Gqrx therefore shows no device entry and FM tests stay silent [Elektroda, 7936, post #15442383] “Unsupported silicon means zero IQ data,” notes developer Alexandru [RTL-SDR.com].

Can I mix OpenSUSE Hamradio RPMs with Mint’s DEB system?

No. OpenSUSE packages rely on RPM metadata and different library versions. Mint uses .deb; cross-installing will break dependencies [Elektroda, neo386, post #15408544]

How can I identify my dongle’s chipset under Linux?

Run: lsusb ‑d 0bda:* | grep -i dvb. RTL2832U shows ID 0bda:2838. Unknown IDs often map to unsupported chips such as 0ccd:0135 (IT9135) [USB-ID-Database].

What minimum hardware do I need for stable 2 MS/s reception?

A dual-core 1.6 GHz CPU and 1 GB RAM handles 2 MS/s with 10 % average load on Gqrx [gqrx.dk]. Laptops below 1 GHz drop 17 % frames, causing audio pops [Elektroda, 7936, post #15451398]

What if audio sounds choppy after I press “DSP Start”?

Reduce sample rate to 1 MS/s or enable decimation. At 2.4 MS/s USB2.0 bandwidth peaks at 85 %, and some controllers throttle, dropping packets [USB-IF].

Is SDR# available on Linux?

Not natively. It is a Windows .NET app. Users run it via Wine but performance lags and mono audio stutters 30 % of the time [WineHQ]. Gqrx or CubicSDR are better Linux choices.

Can I still watch DVB-T with an RTL2832U stick after flashing rtl-sdr?

Yes. Load the original DVB-T driver (dvb_usb_rtl28xxu) or use apps like Kaffeine. Switch back to SDR by unloading that module with sudo rmmod dvb_usb_rtl28xxu [LinuxTV-Wiki].

Edge case: will an RTL2832U work on a USB 1.1 port?

No. IQ data exceeds the 12 Mbps USB 1.1 ceiling. You’ll get ‘Missing samples’ errors within 3 seconds [USB-IF].
