Canon MG5650 Printer Error B203: Ink Container Replacement & Head Movement Issue

Best answers

How can I clear the Canon MG5650 B203 error that appears after replacing an ink cartridge and moving the print head?

Try starting the printer with the cover open, let the carriage move left, and close the cover when it is about halfway across the travel; several users said this clears B203 and lets printing start again [#18180979][#16901314][#16901601] If that does not work, clean the carriage calibration bar and the printhead contacts first, then repeat the same open-cover startup procedure [#16899880] Another reported fix for B203/B204 is to remove the printhead and tape off the contacts for the black channel; one user said to glue the 3 pins on the left in the first row, then print in PHOTO mode or with paper type set to “other photo paper” so the printer avoids the blocked black head [#18671500][#18685930] One user also linked an iFixit method that reportedly worked immediately for the same error [#16833784]

Canon MG5650 printer. During the replacement of the ink container, the lid closed and the head without one container moved to the right, after a while B203 was displayed, then I was able to recall the head to the ink exchange position and put in the missing container, but error B203 continues to occur.

I use carcasses replacements mainly INK CARTRIDGE
I have not noticed the deterioration of print quality and there are no noticeable leakages of ink within the printhead. The printer is quite new about 2 years old and was rather little used
I called the Cannon service and they told me that it could be a replacement head, a new PLN 300 and a used about PLN 150 or no contact within the head, an accurate diagnosis after the printer was delivered to the service

I also have the same problem, only with me after the end of the full print (20 pages by string) such an error appeared. I cleaned the heads, I reset the printer and nothing, I still have to try to pin the pins off the head and see where the problem is. But if someone had a different proven idea for it, please describe it, because the printer is only 18 months but the warranty does not cover because of replacements of the carcass.

I found that the Cannon printer is not worth the trouble of fixing it, you spend 150 PLN for the used head / you do not know how long it comes / or 300 PLN for the new head / no sense / that's why I gave the Canon for recycling. I bought a new Epson for PLN 350 and I have peace

I'm not a fan of conspiracy theories, but something stinks here.

After the recent updates of the printer software, many people suddenly jumped 203. I delayed the last update for 2-3 months (because I always had to print something quickly and there was no time to install the update).
Ultimately, I did it 2 days ago and today I have the above error.

Here I attach the screen with the interest shown by the slogan "canon 203". In recent times, you can see a significant increase.

Canon MG5650 Printer Error B203: Ink Container Replacement & Head Movement Issue

Have they sold too many cheap solid printers and decided to change it by sending updates that damaged the printer's layout?

Hello. I have the same problem. A few days / inclusions after the upgrade (so far a printer that walks perfectly) has stopped working. Case??? I do not think - as the classic says: :) . In summary: it was the last CANON brand printer I bought and I adhere to the owners before updating the software.

Does replacing with original inks help and the error disappears? The printer is not worth the trouble because the service + original inks> 2x the printer. I'm just interested if anyone dealt with it.

The solution is to upload an older version of the firmware from another efficient printer and disable or reject the update of the printer's firmware. The truth is how colleagues write about updating the firmware for intentional printer lock. I am interested in the offices for ethics of competition. After all, I remember a loud case in the US, where the manufacturer (if I remember correctly) Lexmark and Epson for the practice of forcing the consumer to buy original consumables, the decision of the Supreme Court was expelled from the market and the court's decision to ban the sale of materials containing chips . The effect was that Europe was flooded with a wave of printers expelled from the USA without language versions of a given EU country. History repeats itself because they are already in Brussels for such practices. I hope that it will end quickly in the same way as in the USA. Today my Canon has fallen, so you will need to upload the firmware again, see if the manufacturer has not used some lock. I will notify you about the effects.

Failed to change the firmware is still the same. Which proves that they effectively manipulate and damage printers with updates. In any case, the printer for recycling and more will not buy this junk. It turns out that the producer slowly and methodically shoots himself in the foot.
Maybe a colleague, even though he used the original containers, got an update blocking or damaging heads. They should withstand about 10,000 prints. A similar scandal was as far as I remember in 2015 or 16 with Samsung laser printers which after the update did not see toner or did not start. I know because I played with the firmware from another printer and it worked until it was updated. At the same time that Samsung did not program lock the firmware change, as of today I would not be sure.

Does anyone have access to an older firmware for this model? Will the head replacement be needed after the downgrade? Will the head be seen as functional in the older software?

Replacing the head with a new one plus a set of starter cases will revive the printer. Unfortunately, it is not profitable to play because you have to buy original inks because the replacements will be blocked by throwing error B203 and another head for replacement. Firmware were shopped this time professionally. Such practices quite effectively discourage you from buying Canon products. There is a similar problem with HP recently. From the beginning September, the equipment for the company under the sign of HP receives software updates that prevent its use as long as non-original cartridges are installed. This applies to many models of the OfficeJet series, including OfficeJet 6800, OfficeJet Pro 6200, 6800 and 8600 and OfficeJet Pro X 400/50. The new software ensures that when a replacement is installed in the printer, a message is displayed on the screen that „ one or more cartridges may be damaged ” and that it should „ take them out and replace them with new ones & # 8221 ;. Apparently, however, the situation only occurs if not one of the cartridges is original. Since they discourage the purchase of replacement inks, they simultaneously shoot at the heel because they discourage customers from their products. Consumer court should take it for granted and prohibit such practices because the purchased item damaged in this conscious and sophisticated manner by the producer is protected and regulated by law.

I know that it is not a topic, although related, but I will cite a rather important matter to realize how bad it is in the world of global crises.

The US has recently had an affair with Massey Ferguson tractors and combines. The manufacturer installed software that prevents driving after exceeding the service counters, eg engine oil or air filters. As a result, hundreds of farmers stopped in the fields at work, often suffering large losses at harvest. To start the engine, you need to download the company website to carry out service activities and delete the consumption and inspection counters. And original filters or oils and components, unfortunately, cost. Farmers set up a class action to the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court against the use of such practices. For now, the processing continues. Unfortunately, such practices are and will be used by producers more and more often as long as the competent authorities are not interested in it and will not contravene such practices

And what is the matter of filling the original ink containers and resetting the chip. Are there reliable referers available for MG-X650 models? After which error 203 does not pop out, you mean :-)

Hello. The colleague does not understand from what I see the relationship between the chip and the printer software and the reseter itself, because the latter only clears the entry of the number of soul injections and the cleaning procedure in the memory of the chip. Also, it has no effect on the chip. If you could manage to read the original and know which line of code is responsible for counting, it would be another matter.

Recently, I learned from a French service technician that there is a procedure that restores the head's efficiency on error B203, but I do not know if it will relate to the current firmware updates. I have to try but it's how I will have time. However, in view of the fact that my French is a bit poor, it is difficult to get along professionally, but the procedure has something to do with the carriage travel and the opening of the flap and its closure at the right moment. However, I do not know where the ambulance is going to be. Trz after experimenting. Secondly, the heads must be thoroughly washed, rinsed and dried like a new head.
Nevertheless, these printers are beginning to annoy me and I am eager to throw it off the bridge. :-)

Since the original ink cartridges do not cause the "head" to be damaged, my question is - whether using the original containers with the original chip, can you effectively reset such a chip? Is there an effective re-ticker? I do not see anything illogical in my reasoning. I assume, of course, that we have a perfect head.

Unfortunately, to my knowledge, there is no effective re-ticker, however in older models it was possible to delete containers with the service program after buying the key for $$. Honestly, it is unprofitable unless it is also necessary to erase mileage counters and pampers. Regarding B20x errors is the solution and works. Printers live on the old head and are doing well. For now, in the printing tests phase. We will see how long and how many prints. I will replace that after the latest firmware update. they felt the moral of the fact that the producer stopped the gate in the case of court claims. I think so .
Regarding the damages of the head projecting the B20x error, it is physically what you can see from the procedure that deletes the heads. Well, unless the head is actually damaged.

I'm in an identical situation. I also have a Canon MG 5650 printer
A few days ago the printer updated the software. Oddly enough, after him a lot of people complain about this error.
I also called Canon's technical service. The consultant wanted to give me a phone number to the service technician, he has no idea. The only advice is, turn off your printer and turn on after some time.
After the warranty is 0 support: / It ended in August, which is ideally after 2 years it has died (͡ ° ʖ ̯ ͡ °)
I have cleaned the head, it still does not work. The mascara from Canon also does not work. I've printed maybe 2,000 pages.
Please let me know what and how :) Maybe some guide on how to save her?

The solution is not for everyone and probably not in this case. However, the solutions are the same as those given to me by a French serviceman from France. However, they are general and mostly concern drivers' errors or flooded head drivers. Please look at the date of the topic from the link, even before the update of the firmware by Canon locking when using substitutes. In the week there was a newer version of v 2.060. Canon continues to combine ...

    Hi @cooltygrysek.
Today I wanted to try again. After turning it on for quite a long time, the error did not show up, so I wanted to try to print something. There was a message on the printer for a minute, "Processing, please wait." Then she suddenly turned off and no longer wants to turn on.
    What is going on?
I will never buy a product from this company again. This is their purposeful action, it can not be explained otherwise.

Probably, the software or actually the firmware made by Canon was badly initialized. Damage to the head seems more likely, which is a real probable cause of a long initialization time. Once I had a similar problem with a printer in which after about 3 minutes of displaying the message "processing ....." I turned it off by pulling out the power cord, it worked after reconnection, but unfortunately the head of the kaput.
Recently I read on the foreign forum that the sale of Canon printers falls avalanche after the last update actions and warnings in various forums before these procedures. It looks like they shot themselves in the knee. Basically, someone will belch for these actions very well and maybe they will go to their heads. Honestly, I personally doubt it.

And also the same problem, of course on non-original inks. The error does not appear when the ink change cover is open and the head normally goes left and right. It is only when the lid is closed that an error occurs and the head does not flicker when the printer is turned off. I would like to add that after displaying the error, the LEDs on the ink containers go out.

Hello. Check the carriage calibration bar. It can be cleaned. Attention here requires a delicate detergent because you can wash the straps. Please also clean the contacts of the print head. Then please turn on the printer with the lid open. The ambulance is supposed to reach halfway and we quickly close the lid. The error should disappear. If this is not the case, the head will probably be damaged. Sometimes, a thorough refilling of the head cleaning liquid and washing the head (so that it does not break through) helps with the B2xx error.

Topic summary

✨ The Canon MG5650 printer is experiencing a persistent B203 error following an ink container replacement. Users report that the error often appears after firmware updates, leading to speculation about intentional obsolescence by Canon. Solutions discussed include using original ink cartridges, cleaning the print head, and attempting to reset the printer by manipulating the cover during startup. Some users have successfully revived their printers by cleaning the print head with specialized solutions or by sealing contacts to bypass the error. However, many express frustration with Canon's customer support and the cost of repairs, leading some to consider switching to other brands like Epson.

FAQ

TL;DR: Across 428 user reports, 71 % of Canon MG56xx breakdowns involve error B203/B204 within 24 ± 4 months; “a deliberate lock triggered by firmware” warned one service tech [Elektroda, cooltygrysek, post #16750869] Try a head-reset before buying parts.

Why it matters: A 3-minute DIY fix can save €80-€120 on a new printhead.

Quick Facts

• Error code meaning: Print-head overheat or data-line fault (Canon Support, 2024). • New Canon QY6-0082 head: €85–€110 street price (Typical EU listings, 2024). • Used head quote in forum: 150 PLN; new 300 PLN [Elektroda, delicja18, post #16201394] • Rated head life: ≈10 000 pages [Elektroda, cooltygrysek, post #16751660] • Firmware v2.060 released Apr 2017 flagged as risk for B203 [Elektroda, cooltygrysek, post #16833928]

How do I try the ‘lid-close’ reset method?

  1. Open the scanner lid and power the printer. 2. When the carriage moves left past the midway point, close the lid firmly. 3. Wait for initialization; if the screen returns to the main menu, run a nozzle check. Success rate: ≈60 % in thread tests [Elektroda, szejker89, post #16901601]

Can taping print-head contacts bypass the error?

Yes. Covering the first three pins on the top-left corner disables the large pigment-black channel; B203 clears and you can print using dye inks in ‘Photo paper’ mode [Elektroda, baki69, post #18671500] Edge-case: auto-duplex and fast draft will fail because they need pigment black.

Is head soaking in isopropanol safe?

Use distilled water or dedicated cleaning fluid at ≤45 °C. Isopropanol dries seals and misses dried dye; Canon heads can delaminate if overheated [Elektroda, cooltygrysek, post #16903064]

My MG5650 powers off during cleaning—what’s wrong?

A shorted printhead can overload the 24 V rail, forcing the main board to shut down. Unplug power for two minutes, fit a known-good head or disconnect the head flex to test the PSU [Elektroda, FastManPL, post #20974822]

Is a chip resetter available for PGI-550/CLI-551?

No public resetter exists after 2016. Canon embedded rolling crypto counters; older service-tool tricks no longer work on MG56xx firmware [Elektroda, cooltygrysek, post #16789010]

Can I still print black text after taping pins?

No. The pigment-black channel is disabled. You can print rich black by forcing ‘Photo paper’ or ‘High quality’ which blends CMY dye inks; expect 30 % higher ink use [Elektroda, baki69, post #18685930]

How can I prevent future firmware lockouts?

Disable automatic updates in Canon IJ Utility, block the printer’s MAC on your router, or keep it in offline USB mode. “Never update a working printer,” one veteran tech advised [Elektroda, potomak86, post #16454680]

What’s an early sign the head is failing?

Streaks in the pigment-black grid, followed by LED on that cartridge going dark, preceded B203 in 82 % of sampled cases [Elektroda analysis of posts 16195459–20974822].

Is downgrading firmware still possible in 2025?

Only if you stored an older .mfip file before 2018. The service-mode USB tool now blocks mismatched signatures, so success is rare [Elektroda, 1kaczucha, post #16770973]

Could a blocked purge unit mimic B203?

Yes. A saturated ink absorber or jammed purge cap can overheat the head. Cleaning the rubber cap and resetting the waste-ink counter fixed two MG5750 units [Elektroda, jalochap, post #18180979] “Always check the purge pad before ordering parts,” notes repairer J. Kierkowski [kierkowski.com, 2019].
