I want to use my Dell laptop for car diagnostics. Windows 8, Core i7 CPU, 6 GB RAM. The interface has an output that I need to connect to the laptop on COM RS-232. My laptop does not have this port, but it has a VAG connector (three rows of 5 pins). Will the interface work properly after using this adapter?

    No.

You can try with the USB-> RS232 adapter, but not every interface will work.

Well, from what I read on the network, USB is not a good solution.

What difference what people write, it's the only solution you have. Buy, check for yourself. It works for me, many people too.

COM x (RS 232 serial port) on the VGA port (external monitor) no, no  Maybe OBD2 to HDMI adapters appeared on OLX? I would buy a few pieces ... how cheap.

This is not VAG - Volkswagen Audi Gruppe but VGA - Video Graphics Array, i.e. monitor output. Does the laptop have an ExpressCard slot?

I resigned from buying a more advanced device and bought a scanner with an attached display, it reads the basic engine errors and clears them - enough for me

Dell Laptop, Windows 8, Core i7, 6GB RAM: Using VGA 15pin to COM RS-232 Adapter for Car Diagnostics

Topic summary

The discussion revolves around using a Dell laptop with Windows 8, Core i7 CPU, and 6GB RAM for car diagnostics via a COM RS-232 interface. The user seeks to connect the interface to the laptop, which lacks a native RS-232 port but has a VAG connector. Responses indicate that using a USB to RS-232 adapter may not guarantee compatibility with all interfaces. Clarifications reveal that the VAG connector is often confused with VGA, which is a video output. Suggestions include testing inexpensive adapters and considering alternative diagnostic tools, such as an OBD2 scanner with a display, which the user ultimately decided to purchase.
