Kingston 120GB SSD reallocated sector count in HDtune in yellow

Best answers

Is a Kingston 120GB SSD with a yellow reallocated sector count in HD Tune already due for replacement?

A yellow “reallocated sector count” on this SSD does not automatically mean immediate replacement; on SSDs it usually means retired blocks, and HD Tune can misinterpret this SMART attribute. CrystalDiskInfo is the more reliable tool for reading it, and the same raw value can appear there as the SSD’s retired block count [#16331276] [#16331315] If the value is not growing quickly, there is usually no reason to worry, because SSDs have spare blocks reserved for this purpose [#16331305] Still, make a backup of important data now, because the drive may need replacement in the near future if the count starts increasing [#16331184]

Just why CDI showed nothing? is HD Tune "better"? Or maybe he distorted the result?

CDI shows exactly the same 8 reallocated sectors.

Not so fast, reallocated sectors in SSD are nothing out of the ordinary. Each SSD has a "spare" and when the controller detects a damaged cell, it simply stops using it. If the amount does not grow rapidly, do not worry. HD tune also misinterprets the SSD parameter. It's correct in Crystal Disk info. This is "Retired Block Count".
Enter the values for parameters E8 and E9 from CDI.

Note that HDtune also shows this = = Health Status: OK

Do you see the difference but the parameter name? After all, the RAW value is identical in both programs.

Let's see if SSD-Z (screenshots from the first three tabs) something more will "tell" us about this disk.

Of course, you are right. It's the same thing. This parameter, however, unlike in the case of HDD, does not inform about the approaching end of disk life. The number of spare blocks varies depending on the disk, but even if the value of this parameter would be several hundred, there is no reason to worry.

This disk is on a laptop. When it falls, nothing terrible, I didn't need to buy used one. On a desktop computer I have a Goodram 120GB SSD HDtune in it, nothing highlights. After that, Kingston's disk worked on a different laptop and showed 1 bad sector on detailed HDtune scanning. Older laptop broke (HP Pavilion G7 1173DX) and I gave this disk to G7 e153sa with detailed scanning does not show this bad sector. I read that HDTune is not very suitable for SSD drives, and the correct data is given by Crystal.

HDTune often highlights yellow parameters whose value is completely correct.

CDI is a much more reliable program when it comes to SMART.

Just for information, this disk has 7% redundant space (8GB). In sectors, it seems to be 16410915.

This too, I will not now be scared when the first bad sectors were actually removed.

Question, or was made immediately after that purchase Secure Erase :?:

And you didn't enter the third bookmark from SSD-Z for inspection. :|

Kingston 120GB SSD reallocated sector count in HDtune in yellow

Topic summary

✨ The discussion revolves around a Kingston 120GB SSD displaying a reallocated sector count in yellow on HD Tune, raising concerns about its health. Users suggest that reallocated sectors are common in SSDs, as they indicate that the SSD controller has marked damaged cells and is using spare blocks instead. It is emphasized that as long as the number of reallocated sectors does not increase rapidly, there is generally no cause for alarm. CrystalDiskInfo (CDI) is recommended over HD Tune for more accurate SMART data interpretation. The conversation also touches on firmware versions and the importance of secure erasing the SSD after purchase. Users share experiences with different SSDs and tools, concluding that the Kingston SSD's condition is acceptable despite the yellow warning.
