    Hello everyone,

I have a problem that I have encountered in various forums, but which I cannot solve completely myself.
I installed the Windows system image recovery program on a 500 GB external drive. Effect - 32 GB formatted as ESD-USB. The rest invisible.

After thorough scanning, DMDE shows the result as in the picture below

What to do next to recover as much data as possible?

When selected, recover shows the size of only 238 MB and the number of 232 files, when after scanning there were almost 20 thousand.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Sorry, but data recovery only by file signatures.

    By signatures, or extensions?

I'm really desperate to recover this data. Especially photos that didn't have any backup.
I can even manually name individual files so that I can access them.

Then do not recover from the partition, just double click on jpeg and recover all types of extensions known to the program. Some will be damaged, because they are also the remains of previous and deleted data, and lost as a result of overwriting the partition.

With photos there is a lot of comfort, because you will recover them by headers and then you can arrange them according to the date they were taken based on the EXIF file and there will be order :) Photos are files which are usually very many, and they are relatively small. Even if you overwritten part of the disk, the result should be at least decent.

Thank you so much for help. I have recovered over 150 GB of photos. Unfortunately, a lot of it is damaged :(
You can see them as thumbnails, but they can't be opened anymore.

That's right The first 32GB (if anything is found, including $ MFT partitions) and previous photos that were once on the disk will be damaged. As the thumbnail has a size of at least 320x240, you can manually cut it in hex or JpegSnoop and at least recover such a photo. Then you can possibly try to improve the quality, although probably with a poor result - I'm not a graphic designer but jpeg is a lossy compression and it's probably hard to sharpen such a picture from a thumbnail to a size of 640x480.

Topic summary

The discussion revolves around recovering lost data from a 500GB ESD-USB external drive, which was partially formatted, leaving a significant amount of data invisible. The user utilized DMDE for scanning but faced challenges in recovering the data, with only a small fraction of files retrievable. Responses suggest that recovery should focus on file signatures or extensions, particularly for JPEG images, as they can be recovered by headers. Users noted that despite recovering over 150GB of photos, many files were damaged and could only be viewed as thumbnails. Techniques for manual recovery and potential quality improvement of damaged images were also discussed.
