I have a question for practitioners - electricians. A damaged ignition switch can affect the charging of the alternator and the charging indicator lights up. How to check if the ignition switch is faulty or not. The indicator lamp does not light but the engine is starting. This applies to the old Mercedes engine in a speedboat. I am asking for help in this matter.

Hello. If only the charging indicator is missing and the remaining ones are the ignition switch is gone. Without the control the alternator will not be excited and will not be charging, start just checking if it is blown if it will replace if not let it know.

    The key question:
how is it determined that the alternator is not charging?

Because the indicator light is on / does not light up, does the battery discharge, or the lack of required voltage in the system above 12.7v or ammeter?

You have a good compendium of agonizing in the thread:

At present, the electronic charging lamps determine the lighting of the charging light, ecu and the minimum electronic voltage regulators.

He wrote that the control does not light up at all.

    I know and understand it,
but I was asking about the merits of the problem, as stated that there is no charging?!?

Thank you very much. The alternator works. The reason is prosaic. There was no passage in the control housings, and I had two. I checked the bulbs before and they were good, and in my life I would not think that something could break in the control housing. This cause may be useful for the future.
I signed up for the first time and I did not believe anyone could write back.
Thank you again for your help.

    It was nice,
and super, that you described a happy ending.

It remains to wish a minimum of a foot of water under the keel ...
... or actually under the screw.
    ps
Just remember that traditionally there is left-hand traffic in the waters

Hello, as it turned out, the bulb was good, but the contacts in the control itself were so corroded that it was necessary to replace the entire control. I came to this by checking all the cables and devices step by step. Now everything is ok, Charging works smoothly.

Topic summary

The discussion revolves around a malfunctioning alternator in an old Mercedes engine used in a speedboat, specifically regarding the absence of a charging indicator light and the alternator's failure to charge. Users suggest checking the ignition switch, as a faulty switch can prevent the alternator from being excited. The original poster confirms that the alternator is functional, attributing the issue to corroded contacts in the control housing, which required replacement. The importance of verifying all connections and components is emphasized to diagnose similar issues effectively.
