How can I install Windows XP on a Dell Optiplex GX620 when the installer stops with blue screen error 0x0000007B?

Install XP on the GX620 with the SATA controller set to IDE/COMBINATION, because this model’s ICH7 controller does not support AHCI, so the 0x0000007B error is not solved by GPT/MBR changes or by choosing FAT instead of NTFS [#16664555][#16660688][#16660747] If the disk is being reused, delete all partitions and create a fresh NTFS partition before installing [#16660688][#16660747] If you are booting the installer from a USB flash drive, the boot media itself may be the problem; one suggested fix was replacing NTDETECT.COM on the USB installer [#16664555]

    Hello !

I have already looked for answers to this problem on various forums but unfortunately I did not find ...

I currently have two computers and recently wanted to install an operating system on this older one. At the beginning I installed win 10, unfortunately it turned out to be too demanding for the computer, so I decided to install win xp and that's where the problem started ...
the old computer is a Dell optiplex gx 620 with an intel d 920 processor and some samsung 80gb SATA disk.

I started normally from installing from a windows CD, unfortunately the cd-rom didn't even read it. I made a disc image on a pendrive and the installation started here, unfortunately after unpacking the installation components, a blue screen appears with the error 0x0000007B.
Then I took the hard drive out of the old computer and installed it in the new one. I formatted the disk from the old computer (it had win 10) and started installing XP on the old disk using a newer computer. There, unfortunately, he did not want to boot from the disc, although after booting the system he sees it normally and I have access to its contents. After trying with a USB flash drive, the installation on the new computer works but does not see the hard drive from the old computer, even though the drive is visible in the connected hardware and I can access its contents after booting the system. Disconnecting both SSD with windows and HDD and connecting the HDD from the old computer does not help either. When installing from the disc with the system turned on, it says that it cannot be installed because the program will not work in the 64 bit system. I don't know what else I can do to install XP on the old computer.

    Thank you for your answer.
Honestly, I didn't know about these GPT and MBR disks. I formatted the HDD that XP wants to install on. Is it MBR after the format? If not then how to make MBR?
I read about IDE and AHCI, unfortunately in the BIOS, I did not find such settings and I searched it thoroughly ...
Tried installing with both FAT and NTFS, unfortunately it doesn't go from this or that :(

    PS
Partition WIzard shows all disks as MBR, the one with Windows 10 too.

The BIOS looks like the picture below. I tried with the "combination" option but it didn't help.

It would be nice to integrate the driver with the system or install it with FDD during installation.

What driver and how to integrate? I tried to integrate the sata disk drivers with the windows install using nlite but it was impossible ...
I installed windows on this newer computer, changing the BIOS settings from AHCI to IDE. Unfortunately, after relocating the disk to the old computer, drivers were missing, so neither the keyboard nor the mouse worked. When trying to repair the system, windows started popping up with commands and information that there is no access to some files ...
Now I will try to burn the disc with windows xp sp2.

I will be very grateful for the ready install with drivers ;)
I couldn't do what they advise on expressit because the driver base is torrent and I don't want to download (no peers).
I did what on programs but it did not work ... I do not burn CDs, I create instalks with the WinSetupFromUSB program and try to install from USB because the reader does not want to read Windows CDs: / Does it make CD-USB differences?

    PS.
On F6, the computer does not respond at all and at a later stage of the installation requires a floppy disk with drivers. Can you do something about it? Currently, I copied the files from the disc using nlite to the folder on the desktop, I attached the drivers to the files in this folder (also using nlite) and then recorded it on a USB flash drive using WinSetupFromUSB. Am I doing something wrong or is something missing?

It is exactly like Spoak writes and do not mess around, because it will be of no avail.

Unless you want to add them to Xp by yourself using, for example, NLite, I think, but why if they are, install to, download.

Unfortunately, there was no PW from Szpoak. This morning I got links from kiko80 on PW, for which thank you very much. Ready installations did not give me anything, the same error as on my board, so apparently you can't install xp there; s
I installed the system by transferring the disk to a newer computer, which can be changed to IDE in bios, and then after transferring back to an older computer, I installed the drivers manually and somehow it works ... unfortunately it was impossible otherwise.

GX620 this is the equipment where XP was originally; if the boot is not set up correctly, the optical drive is ailing
Since the SATA controller is in the ICH7, there is no AHCI.

@Wirtuozz - still struggle with the pendrive but first replace the NTDETECT.COM file on it with this one:

Exactly that you have to combine sometimes and even the effects are:

The computer works, but it was impossible to install XP on it, I had to transfer the disk to another computer and install the system there, which is risky because windows will not work in every case. I just succeeded, but it is not known whether XP will work 100% as it should and probably not everyone will have such a method ...
It's true, the gx620 had Xp ex factory, I also have CDs for it with dell's Xp. In fact, I do not know why windows do not want to be installed now. As for the discs, the drive reads all except those with windows ... I also do not know why ... maybe it is something with the OEM version ?? That's why I was "tired" of the flash drive. The installation started from the pendrive but ended with a blue screen.
For now, the system works and it's ok after installing the drivers manually, but thanks for another hint, maybe it will be useful to me or someone else who will look here ;)

Topic summary

✨ The discussion revolves around troubleshooting the installation of Windows XP on a Dell Optiplex GX620, which encounters a blue screen error (0x0000007B). The user initially attempted to install Windows 10 but found it too demanding for the hardware. After switching to Windows XP, issues arose with the CD-ROM not reading the installation media, leading to the use of a USB flash drive. The error 0x0000007B is attributed to the need for an MBR disk format instead of GPT, and the requirement for IDE mode in the BIOS settings, as the system defaults to AHCI. Various suggestions include using Partition Manager to format the disk to NTFS, integrating SATA drivers into the installation media, and ensuring the correct BIOS settings are applied. Ultimately, the user managed to install XP by first setting up the disk on a newer computer configured to IDE mode and then transferring it back to the older system, although concerns about driver compatibility and system stability remain.

FAQ

TL;DR: On a Dell OptiPlex GX620, fix 0x0000007B by using IDE/“Combination” mode and, for USB installs, replacing 1 file (NTDETECT.COM). “Since the SATA controller is in the ICH7, there is no AHCI.” [Elektroda, WojtasJD, post #16664555] Why it matters: It helps anyone asking how to install Windows XP on a GX620 without blue screens.

Quick Facts

How do I fix 0x0000007B when installing Windows XP on a Dell OptiPlex GX620?

Enter BIOS, set SATA Operation to “Combination” (IDE), then restart the XP installer. This avoids the storage driver mismatch that triggers 0x0000007B. If installing from USB, also refresh the boot files on the stick as noted below. “SATA NATIVE isn’t AHCI here; use IDE emulation.” [Elektroda, 2920901, post #16661270]

Where is the SATA/AHCI/IDE option in the GX620 BIOS?

In BIOS, open the Devices tab and locate “SATA Operation.” Choose “Combination” for IDE emulation. This setting lets XP Setup see the drive without AHCI drivers. After you change it, save and reboot to the installer. [Elektroda, 2920901, post #16660747]

Does the GX620 even support AHCI?

No. The GX620’s Intel ICH7 controller does not offer AHCI. Treat “Combination” as IDE emulation for legacy OS installs like XP. “Since the SATA controller is in the ICH7, there is no AHCI.” [Elektroda, WojtasJD, post #16664555]

Can I install XP from a USB stick if my optical drive won’t read XP discs?

Yes. Prepare a USB installer, then replace NTDETECT.COM on the USB with the fixed one referenced in the discussion. This often resolves hangs or 0x7B during USB-based setup on older Dells. Reboot and retry setup after replacing the file. [Elektroda, WojtasJD, post #16664555]

What causes the 0x0000007B error during XP setup?

It’s an INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE issue, usually from the installer lacking the correct storage driver or mode. On GX620, using SATA “Combination” (IDE) prevents the mismatch. If partitions are corrupted, recreate them cleanly before retrying. [Elektroda, 2920901, post #16660747]

Do I need to convert GPT to MBR for XP on this machine?

GX620-era systems use MBR. Confirm disks as MBR in your partitioning tool, delete existing partitions, and create a fresh NTFS partition before running XP Setup. This avoids layout conflicts during installation. [Elektroda, Wirtuozz, post #16660699]

Does Windows XP really have problems with FAT partitions?

No. A moderator clarifies that “Windows XP has no problems with handling FAT partitions.” Use NTFS for better reliability and permissions, but FAT alone is not the reason for 0x7B here. [Elektroda, 2920901, post #16660688]

Can I slipstream SATA drivers into an XP installer for the GX620?

You can, but GX620’s ICH7 lacks AHCI, so slipstreaming AHCI drivers won’t help this model. If you still build custom media, start with XP SP3 and integrate mass-storage packs. Otherwise, use BIOS “Combination” mode. [Elektroda, 2920901, post #16661490]

What’s a simple 3-step way to prep a USB XP installer that works on GX620?

  1. Build the XP USB stick with your preferred tool.
  2. Replace NTDETECT.COM on the USB with the fixed version.
  3. Set BIOS to “Combination” and boot the USB to install. [Elektroda, WojtasJD, post #16664555]

Is moving the HDD to another PC to install XP a valid workaround?

Yes, but it’s risky. One user installed XP on a newer PC set to IDE, then moved the disk back and installed drivers manually. It worked, but device mismatches can break booting on different hardware. [Elektroda, Wirtuozz, post #16663756]

What if my DVD drive reads other discs but not Windows XP media?

Use USB installation. The thread reports readers that accept other discs yet fail on XP media. A USB stick plus the NTDETECT.COM replacement and “Combination” mode gets around flaky optical drives. [Elektroda, Wirtuozz, post #16665435]

Which XP Service Pack should I use for the smoothest install?

Use XP SP3 media when possible. Earlier SP levels lack updated storage support and hotfixes. If you only have SP2, BIOS IDE emulation remains necessary on GX620. [Elektroda, 2920901, post #16661490]

What is NTDETECT.COM and why replace it?

NTDETECT.COM initializes hardware at boot for NT-based systems. Some USB boot builders include versions that fail on older BIOSes. Replacing it with the fixed file restores detection and allows setup to proceed. [Elektroda, WojtasJD, post #16664555]

What are MBR and GPT in simple terms?

They are partition table formats. MBR is legacy and required by XP. GPT is newer and tied to UEFI systems. On the GX620, confirm MBR, then create an NTFS partition before installing XP. [Elektroda, Wirtuozz, post #16660699]

Any real-world spec example from this thread?

Yes. The successful install involved an 80 GB Samsung SATA HDD on a GX620 with a Pentium D 920 CPU. After BIOS IDE mode and driver installs, the system ran stably. [Elektroda, Wirtuozz, post #16660587]

Edge case: What if F6 won’t respond or I have no floppy drive?

That’s expected. XP’s F6 driver injection expects a floppy. On GX620, switch to “Combination” mode or use a slipstreamed SP3 USB installer instead of relying on F6. [Elektroda, Wirtuozz, post #16661832]
