I bought a used trunk milling machine powered by Honda GX 390 engine (Praxis model PRX 13.0).
It burns nicely, does not kick, but the past of the machine is unknown. I wanted to do a full service of the machine before the season, while using oil that will work in high temperatures in the summer.
What type of oil should I use?
Does it necessarily have to be a dedicated Honda oil?
What to check in the engine (or replace it if necessary) - of course, in addition to the air filter and candle.

As you describe, if the engine condition is good, it is worth investing in synthetic oil. Engine of very good design that does not require frequent maintenance, however, using synthetic oil, e.g. 0w40, regardless of the manufacturer, you will definitely extend the life of the engine as if you were using mineral oil. Here you have the manual. https://www.mojahonda.pl/download/silniki/instrukcja_obslugi_GX240_270_340_390_2010.pdf

Only use synthetic engine oil like for cars or some dedicated? I also have the motul recommended for the Honda rancher quad- I use it in my ATVs.

This is a simple design that does not require any specially dedicated oils. You can use 0w60 oil if the engine will work for a long time at high temperature and under heavy load. I assume it will be working in the summer - thanks for your help.

If you work in winter it is 5w30, the summer period is 10w30. Is the engine working properly now? If so, replace the candle and filter and check the spark net if there is one.

But can it be a typical car synthesizer? I have a lot of such leftovers.
The engine fires nicely even in the cold, does not knock, does not kick, it is strong. It has a cracked plastic air filter housing and welded muffler covers and a dented fuel tank.
I am also thinking about replacing these elements - if someone would have any at the disposal, please ask for info.

Topic summary

The discussion revolves around the appropriate engine oil for a Honda GX 390 engine, specifically in a used trunk milling machine (Praxis model PRX 13.0). Users recommend using synthetic oil, such as 0w40 or 0w60, to enhance engine longevity, especially under high temperatures and heavy loads. It is noted that dedicated Honda oil is not strictly necessary, and typical car synthetic oils can be used. Additionally, users suggest performing a full service, including replacing the spark plug and air filter, and checking the spark arrestor. Concerns about the engine's condition and potential replacements for damaged components like the air filter housing and muffler covers are also mentioned.
