Hello, I have a B&S 6KM mower which is already 5 years old and it is quite smoking while working (it apparently takes oil), some mower oil was poured there before. Currently, I have a Castrol Magnataec 5w40 on hand and I wonder if I put it in it will finish the engine? - anyway, the whole cutter is already falling apart and it cost 2600- :(

    I would ask for advice.

Mineral oil SAE 30 should be used for B&S engines. Is the oil running low?
Smoke may be caused by a dirty, wet air filter.
Is the oil level too high by any chance - pour in 0.6 liters.

Yes, I already know that sae30 al e interested me whether this castrol will be bad as a replacement :)

As for the filter, it must be replaced. Oil according to the measuring cup.

I took off the front cover of the piston and it is covered with burnt oil and the candle is also stained with burned oil. When starting the piston, a minimum amount of oil remains in the cylinder - I do not know if it should be like that.

For now I'm waiting for info about this oil and after cleaning the case back I will fire up the goat

You took off the heads, the carbon deposit needs to be removed, the candles replaced, the SAE 30 oil, the air filter. And when the engine is running, do not tilt it sideways or shine down, if you have a sloping ground to mow, try to drive uphill, the engine tilts the oil blowing to the air filter and from there to the engine. If traces of oil remain on the cylinder surface, it does not bode well, if there is no large threshold on the cylinder, you can replace the rings.

Instead of SAE30, you can easily pour 10W40, 15W40 automotive oils into the mower.

I have been using such mower oils for years and nothing is happening.

For sure, car oil will be better than lawn mower oil.

I pour the following oil into the lawn mower and outboard engine:
    MoS2-LEICHTLAUF 10W-40 from Liqui Moly.
In the mower I remade the air intake, the filter is at the top by the handle. I ran a conduit from the filter to the carburetor.

SAE30 oil is designed to operate in an ambient temperature of 10 ° C - 30 ° C. Multigrade oil is not needed - unless you are mowing snow at -10 ° C.
The API class is important, it will definitely run on SE - SG class oil, but I do not know the recommendations for these engines. You certainly do not need high-quality car oil with MoS2 additives.

So far, you haven't written why the car oil will be bad.
Why buy another oil when you can use the one you have?
Certainly the MoS2 additives will not harm the engine.

Hello dear group, I'm new here and I have such a problem with the hecht 5 KM mower, namely: you can hear a rattling in the engine, when there is new oil, it is not there, but after a month it returns, also when I lift the rear of the mower up and when I go down the mower also does not hear it even if there is old oil. I change the oil twice a season. I am attaching a video. [attach: 7fd729d9f8] [/ attach: 7fd729d9f8]

You can use a different car oil, but within reason. Certainly, it cannot be synthetic oil, i.e. the one with the designation 0W ......, 5W ....... these are oils for modern car engines. The mower's engines are simple and you can't overdo it with oil. Mower manufacturers recommend SAE 30 10W30 oil. It is a low grade semi-synthetic oil - API SG. Personally, I would recommend 10W 40 - API SL car oil, it is also a cheap oil of a slightly higher quality. Its advantage is better lubrication and behavior on hot days, as indicated in the name by the number 40 (originally 30).
Why is it worth flooding with car oil. For lawn mower oil, we pay about PLN 15 for 0.6 l, for a car with much better parameters, we also pay about PLN 15, but for a liter, we often have such oil.
If the mower takes up too much oil, it can be flooded with 15W40 mineral oil. It is a thicker oil.

    Answering the question "djpits"
Castrol 5W40 is not suitable, it is too rare, it will damage the mower in a short time.
As for the 10W40 oil, I use the OPEL GM 10W40 SEMISYNTHETIC SL / CF A3 / B3 / B4 1L, it costs about PLN 14 per liter, 5 liters - about PLN 55 (allegro). This oil can be safely mowed on a hot day.

I have a B&S 5KM mower for about 18 years. I have been using 10W40 oil (different brands depending on what is left after replacing the car) from the moment of purchase. I change the oil +/- every 20 hours of operation 2 times a season. Weekly baskets of 15 acres of lawn. The mower does not pick up any oil. Filter - air insert every season. In addition, after each mowing, it is washed with a carcher from the bottom and the entire engine, although apparently it cannot. The engine works like new, the only repairs are welding the housing.

"loufer888" I also have this opinion. 10W40 oil, no matter what. I just use the Opłowski because I have easy access to it. No semi-synthetic material knocks out the quality and content of cleaning agents, so it will not damage the mower.

Hello, I wanted to join the topic. As someone already wrote, car oil is sometimes cheaper per litre, is always left over after a change and in theory should be better. I am therefore considering using one myself.
Just the essential question is, which oil would be the best to replace SAE 30.
I see a lot of people here recommending 10W-40, but why not 10W-30 or 5W-30? To my understanding such should be more like it? B&S sells 5W-30 synthetics in addition to the 30 oil as a premium or for winter running engines.
I have 5W-30 and 5W-40 synthetics in my cars, will either of these be suitable or is it better not to risk it?

Topic summary

The discussion centers around the appropriate oil for a Briggs & Stratton (B&S) 6KM lawn mower, particularly regarding the use of Castrol Magnatec 5W40. Users recommend using SAE 30 oil, which is specifically designed for B&S engines, while some suggest that 10W40 or 15W40 automotive oils can also be used without issues. Concerns are raised about the potential damage from using a thinner oil like 5W40, especially given the mower's age and existing smoking issues. Participants emphasize the importance of maintaining proper oil levels and replacing worn components, such as the air filter and spark plug, to prevent further engine damage. The consensus is that while car oils can be used, they should not be synthetic or too thin, and the original manufacturer's recommendations should be prioritized.
