Why is the eternal chip mounted in these printers? Is it not enough to reset the toner with a correctly set gear? What's the difference between a toner reset from a hidden menu and a gear reset?

Some printers do not have the option to reset from the "rack" or it is not effective. Installing an "eternal chip" solves this problem definitely. The printer then gets the option to reset the toner after turning off or a special function available in the printer menu. Unfortunately, equipment manufacturers have come to the conclusion that such trivial solutions as mechanical reset using a toner latch do not generate sufficient revenues from the sale of consumables, so they reach for more advanced solutions. Of course, the creators of "alternative" solutions do not owe them and create just such "eternal chips". Typical police fight with thieves ;)

Often, a reset from the menu does not work, because the mechanism will not jump and you need to physically disassemble the toner and twist the wheels ... so that it would be funny very often also in original Brother materials ...
