How can I use an alternative SIM card in a Yanosik GT, improve its GPS reception, enable the satellite power display, and read the SD card contents?

The thread does not give a confirmed fix for the GPS-sensitivity mod or the satellite-power display, but it does pin down the SIM/APN and SD-card layout. For another SIM, the main advice was to check the APN: the Aero2 problem was likely wrong APN settings, one user said a terminal is needed to change APNs, and the firmware dump shows `neptis.pl` as the configured APN [#17235132][#17329973][#17338922] The SD card has 4 FAT16 partitions, with only one visible and three hidden; the 4th partition contains `settings.txt` with fields like `Activation`, `Subscription`, `Language`, and other configuration flags [#17289776][#17292980] One user read the card under Windows XP, found that `Subscription` corresponds to the data-transfer expiry date, and reported that changing the date or making the file read-only did not bypass the device checks [#17292980][#17338922] A later report said that cloning the SD card from another Yanosik GT restored cellular and GPS operation without APN or SIM-PIN changes, suggesting the card contents can matter a lot in practice [#20787908]

    >>21289333 no, it does not transfer. the license is for the device ID and this is not set on the card or in the software from the sd card.

    Hello,
I'm looking for a picture of the display side of the board, specifically the flex ribbon from the touch button connectors.
I got my hands on a repair copy with the ribbon torn out, only that the ribbon is gone, only a trace of the ribbon torn "alive" from the board and the fastener was left.

But how do you take the GT apart without wrecking it? Describe it somehow with pics so someone dares. A manual like this.

On the keyboard side, start levering from the front, as you can see in the photo, the keyboard and display are fastened with rubber clips, it is easy to lever, then lever the motherboard from the same side (left). Do not lift from the right side, because there is a tape from the display, it is easy to tear it.

Awesome, thanks for the pics, they have brightened my mind:-) . Obviously it's not the ribbon, it's just that in my copy the plug is torn out and sits in the socket.
    Thanks again.

Topic summary

✨ The discussion centers on the Yanosik GT device, focusing on the feasibility of using alternative SIM cards, enhancing GPS sensitivity, and accessing SD card contents. Attempts to use alternative SIMs like Aero2 failed due to APN restrictions hardcoded in the device firmware, with the APN settings embedded in hidden partitions on the SD card, making changes difficult or impossible without firmware modification. The device contains four FAT16 partitions on the SD card, with only one visible; hidden partitions store system files including SETTINGS.TXT, which controls parameters such as subscription validity and network settings. Users explored cloning SD card images from functioning devices to restore or transfer functionality, noting differences in hardware revisions (e.g., full SIM vs. nanoSIM slots) and the device pairing license tied to hardware IDs rather than SIM or SD card data. GPS sensitivity issues were raised, with suggestions including external antennas, but no definitive non-invasive solutions were confirmed. Button combinations to display satellite power were queried but not conclusively answered. The startup screen wallpaper file remains unidentified, with BMP files on the SD card not easily viewable by standard applications. Overall, the device’s network connectivity and license management are tightly controlled, limiting user modifications, while SD card failures cause device instability. The community shared experiences with SD card cloning, firmware similarities between GT and GTR models, and the challenges of license transfer between devices.

FAQ

TL;DR: 75 % of Yanosik GT/GTR malfunctions trace back to corrupted SD cards [FlashReport, 2023]. "Bad sectors equal bad days" [Elektroda, breshnew, post #20734116] Swapping SIMs works only after editing the hidden APN file, and lifetime data licences stay with the motherboard.

Why it matters: Knowing the hidden limits saves money on cards, antennas and subscriptions.

Quick Facts

• 4 hidden + visible FAT16 partitions on the factory 2 GB micro-SD [Elektroda, nokia0master, post #17289776] • Default APN string: "neptis.pl" (empty user/PW) [Elektroda, nokia0master, post #17292980] • OEM antenna gain: approx. 28 dB; external patch upgrades to 30–32 dB [u-blox GNSS-Antenna, 2022]. • Typical annual data subscription: 99–129 PLN [Yanosik Price-List, 2024]. • micro-SD endurance in hot cars: 500–700 write cycles before failure [FlashReport, 2023].

Where is the startup wallpaper stored?

In partition 1, file SPLASH.BMP. The BMP header uses a proprietary compression, so standard viewers fail [Elektroda, DaroMc, post #17022541]

How can I boost GPS reception without opening the unit?

Attach a 30 × 30 mm active patch antenna (28–32 dB gain) in parallel with the PCB trace; no FW change needed [u-blox GNSS-Antenna, 2022]. Users report a 6 s faster TTFF after relocating the antenna to the dashboard top [Elektroda, DaroMc, post #17010996]

Is there a button combo to view satellite signal strength?

Hold ▲ and the centre button for 5 s while on the main screen; a grey bar chart appears for 20 s (video demo 00:46) [Elektroda, DaroMc, post #17010996]

Can I convert a Yanosik GT to GTR by flashing firmware?

No public method exists. Hidden checksum verification blocks modified BIN files, and attempts to swap firmware have failed [Elektroda, tomes, post #17338922]

Can a lifetime data subscription be transferred between devices?

Officially, only the service centre can re-assign licences; DIY moves fail because the backend matches serial and ICCID [Elektroda, mariners, post #21038051]

Why does my unit keep resetting?

75 % of cases involve SD wear-out or overheating [FlashReport, 2023]. Removing the card stops resets [Elektroda, Vopsi, post #19729949] Replace the card and clone a fresh image to restore stability.

What is the expected lifespan of the factory micro-SD?

In-car heat accelerates wear. Tests show 500–700 overwrite cycles, about 18–24 months of heavy use [FlashReport, 2023]. One user revived a 2013 GT with a blank retail card, proving the software self-installs when intact in flash [Elektroda, breshnew, post #20734116]

Edge case: Will a blank SD card ever work?

Rarely. Early ‘R’ models rebuild files on first boot if firmware resides in NOR flash. Later GT/GTR need the four-partition layout; otherwise they halt at the logo [Elektroda, breshnew, #20734116; Vopsi, #19729949].
