Hello, I have a problem with formatting the SSD disk when I try to install the system, I get an error that prevents both deleting and formatting the disk.

Crystal disk info, it shows me something, it doesn't tell me much.

SSD Formatting Issue: Goodram Iridium Pro 480GB - Error Preventing Deletion & Formatting

I tried to delete and format the disk via ubuntu before fdisk or gparted, but always after making changes, the disk returned to its previous state, or there was no formatting at all, I don't know. After making changes and rebooting, the system always returns to one state.

I do not know what to do with it, I bought the disk about 1.5 months ago, but will they accept a guarantee in such a case? I do not know what to do.

    Model: Goodram Iridium pro 480GB

Give back the guarantee - you won't learn anything by yourself.

You can still do it, but you have to notice that everything can be started. It's just that after a reboot there is always a return to the state before the restart. And I don't really like giving back the disk with the data saved on the disk. : \ But if you have to, you have to. I was hoping that I could somehow recover. : \

And in this state you have access to the disk? Can you write and read? Can you see these partitions?
The disk is damaged - the only question is whether you are not able to delete the data.

You will not recover this data on your own and the companies dealing with it are very expensive. It is better to sacrifice this data and have a new disk.

I have access, I can boot normally. Temporary recording is possible. But after reboot, all changes go back. Partitions can be seen. I have no idea. While trying to format during reinstallation, I got the error: "We couldn't format the selected partition" Error: 0x80070057

I was able to transfer data to another disk. So I won't lose anything but a few hours of configuration and installation. But I will give away the disk with all the browser data, etc.

Is this the Goodram invention called "Iridium Pro"? (I ask because somehow they are ashamed and do not mean them more precisely in the place of the model) - still the temperature suggests, they almost all have in all conditions 30 ° C :D

The self-respecting SSD manufacturer has a dedicated soft for your SSD and there you could try Sanitize / Secure Erase and from them you only have this funny SMART program to read so you can still get tired under Parted Magic (the last free ver. Is the one on UltimateBootCD) but I can see thinly:

You can always try ... Well, I'll give it as a guarantee, and if they think I'm going to spoil something, at least I'll have another painful lesson from my life. Maybe the last one.

And yet not. I don't want to have fun anymore. I will take the guarantee to the salon tomorrow and see what they say. Although I have mixed feelings, it is not clear what will result. : \

Thanks for your help, if needed I will let you know what was going on, maybe someone will be useful someday. :)

So you have a reading you have no record? Files can be manually deleted, probably not? Instead of formatting the disk, delete the data. If you delete, overwrite with zeros if possible.

    Give back the warranty.

That's all you need to say:

You cannot delete it manually. The memory returns to the state it was in before it was deleted after a restart. The zero overwrite option didn't work either.

So I will. I have already packed the disk in a box, it will print the invoice in a moment. I'll see what it will be. Fortunately, I still have one smaller HDD and one storage in my PC, so I could easily transfer the necessary data to it. And install the system.

Topic summary

✨ The user is experiencing issues with formatting a Goodram Iridium Pro 480GB SSD, encountering errors that prevent both deletion and formatting. Despite attempts using Ubuntu tools like fdisk and gparted, changes revert after rebooting. The user has access to the disk and can read/write temporarily, but all modifications are lost upon restart. Responses suggest returning the SSD under warranty, as data recovery is deemed difficult and costly. The user successfully transferred data to another disk and ultimately exchanged the faulty SSD for a new one at a retailer.

FAQ

TL;DR: Seeing "We couldn't format the selected partition" (0x80070057) and changes reverting after reboot points to SSD write‑lock or controller failure; back up, try Secure Erase, then RMA. [Elektroda, Rafael7777, post #17049070]

Why it matters: PC builders troubleshooting SSDs that won’t format can quickly decide whether to attempt a Secure Erase or use the warranty to avoid data loss and downtime.

Quick Facts

What does Windows error 0x80070057 mean during install?

Windows Setup code 0x80070057 indicates a parameter or partition error. It appears when partition creation or formatting fails. Cleaning partitions can help if writes actually persist. If changes revert after reboot, hardware write‑lock is likely. [“Windows Setup error 0x80070057”]

Why do partition changes revert after reboot on my SSD?

Your SSD is behaving as write‑locked. Writes appear to work but do not persist. Both Windows and Linux tools then show the old state on reboot. That points to controller or firmware failure, not file‑system issues. [Elektroda, Rafael7777, post #17048995]

Can a Secure Erase fix an SSD that won’t format? How do I run it?

Sometimes. If the controller is responsive, ATA Secure Erase can reset the drive. Use Parted Magic’s Erase Disk tool to issue Secure Erase. How‑To: 1. Boot Parted Magic and open Erase Disk. 2. Select your SSD and choose Secure Erase/Sanitize. 3. Confirm and let it complete, then power‑cycle. [“Parted Magic: Secure Erase”]

Should I just use the warranty instead of troubleshooting?

Yes, when writes revert after reboot or Secure Erase is blocked. That’s a strong failure signal. As one expert advised: “Give back the warranty.” Document the error and symptoms for a quick swap. [Elektroda, Kasek21, post #17049957]

What was the final fix in this thread?

The user returned the SSD to a major retailer. They received an immediate replacement after describing the formatting and persistence issues. No complex diagnostics were required. [Elektroda, Rafael7777, post #17055425]

How can I wipe personal data if the SSD won’t format or delete files?

If writes don’t persist, software wiping won’t work. The user reported zero‑fill attempts failed. Try Secure Erase first. If it’s blocked, your only option is warranty return. Remove the drive promptly and avoid further use. [Elektroda, Rafael7777, post #17049986]

Is this behavior proof of a failing SSD?

Yes. Read access with non‑persistent writes indicates a hardware fault. A contributor summarized it plainly: the disk is damaged. Replace the drive under warranty after backing up what you can read. [Elektroda, 310artur, post #17049049]

Is professional data recovery worth it for this issue?

It’s rarely economical for consumer SSDs. One responder noted, “You will not recover this data on your own and the companies… are very expensive.” If you can still read data, copy it now, then RMA. [Elektroda, Pedros050, post #17049057]

Is this specific to Goodram Iridium Pro drives?

No brand is immune. In this case, even a 480 GB unit failed after about 1.5 months. Such early failures happen and should be handled via warranty. [Elektroda, Rafael7777, post #17048995]

Why do both Windows and Ubuntu tools fail to format in this scenario?

Both depend on the drive accepting persistent writes. If the SSD discards changes, each OS will show the old partition table after reboot. That’s hardware‑level, not OS‑level. [Elektroda, Rafael7777, post #17048995]

How can I test if my SSD is stuck read‑only?

Create a small file or change a partition, then reboot. If the change vanishes, the drive isn’t persisting writes. Repeat from another OS live media to confirm. If both fail, treat it as hardware failure. [Elektroda, Rafael7777, post #17048995]

What immediate steps should I take when this happens?

Back up any readable data right away. Attempt a Secure Erase/Sanitize once. If it’s blocked or changes still revert, stop and use the warranty. Document the exact error text. [Elektroda, WojtasJD, post #17049124]

SMART shows a constant 30°C on my SSD. Is that normal?

A constant 30°C reading has been observed and isn’t diagnostic by itself. Don’t rely on that value to judge health. Focus on persistence tests and error behavior instead. [Elektroda, WojtasJD, post #17049124]
